Our loving, kind and beautiful mom, grandma, aunt and friend, Marie S. Rasmussen, 86, of Bountiful, Utah, passed away May 24, 2023, unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep. Her family is deeply saddened by her sudden death but comforted in knowing she is reunited with her husband Jim of 52 years and was greeted by many family members.
She was born January 26, 1937, in her grandmother's home in Spanish Fork, UT to Mark and Ruby Taylor Stewart. As a young child, she grew up in SLC, UT attending local elementary and middle schools. She was a proud graduate of South High School, Class of 1955.
Marie graduated from the University of Utah in 1960 with her Bachelor of Arts degree and a focus in library science. During her college years, she worked at the George Thomas Library on the U campus. She loved working on campus, using the Dewey Decimal System, and helping the professors and students. After graduation, Marie decided to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was called to the Northern California Mission and spent a week at the Mission Training Center downtown SLC, then boarded a train bound for San Francisco. Her time in the mission field blessed her life and the lives of her family. She was full of mission stories and enjoyed the few times she was able to go back and visit her mission. Her service was a great example to her family and was instrumental in the strength of her testimony.
Marie returned from her mission to SLC to continue her career in library services. She worked at the Genealogy Library, BYU Library, and the Medical Library at LDS Hospital. During her college and single years, she made many lifelong friends and talked often of her roommates, dances, and apartments in SLC. She was not sure she would have the opportunity to marry, but in the winter of 1966, she met her Prince Charming, James A. Rasmussen at a singles dance and they were married July 21, 1967, in the Logan, Utah Temple. They bought their first home in Bountiful, UT and ultimately were blessed with 4 daughters - they specialized in girls.
The family had a camper and enjoyed going to the National Parks, ward campouts, and having sleepovers in the backyard. Many family trips were taken to Hawaii, Yellowstone, Disneyland, Disneyworld, Shakespeare Festival, a cruise and weekend get-aways. Jim and Marie and family have been season ticket holders for CenterPoint Legacy Theater since it's opening and have provided many friends and family opportunities to attend the local theater. After her daughters were school aged, Marie went back to work part time at the Salt Lake City Public Library. She worked in the Children's Room for years and loved books and reading and passed this love on to all her daughters. She often said she got paid for storytelling, and buying picture books, readers and fairytales. She also had the opportunity to work at the Sprague Branch in Sugarhouse and ultimately retired from the main library in SLC.
After retirement, Marie submitted her paperwork to serve a mission at the Family History Library for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served her mission for 10 years and had a true love of Family History and the Spirit of Elijah. She was amazing at adapting to learning computers, searches and helping people find their ancestors. She loved sharing stories of her ancestors with her family any chance she could and made a book of information for each of her grandchildren.
Marie made friends wherever she went and was even planning a lunch date on the day she died. She maintained her friendship with her college friends, neighborhood friends and previous ward friends. Many had just talked with her the week before she died. She also had a special relationship with her next-door neighbor girls, Claire (8), Spring (5), and Hope (2) who gathered her mail and visited often.
Marie is survived by her loving children; Richard Rasmussen, Becky (Roger) Holgreen, Quincy Cordero, Jennifer (Karl) Anderson, and Kathryn Rasmussen; her 8 grandchildren Rylee (Hunter) Knight, Walker (Sydney) Holgreen, Carson Holgreen, Vale Cordero, Grace Cordero, Mac (Taylor) Anderson, Blake Anderson, and Michell (Ryan) Crandall; and her 4 great-grandchildren Harvey, Joelle, Trevan and Miller. Preceded in death by her husband Jim of 52 years, parents, brother and sister.
