Marion Poll Mangum

January 3, 1929 — December 9, 2017

Marion Poll Mangum, born January 3, 1929 in South Weber, Utah to Charles Vernon and Stella Mary Thompson Poll, passed away peacefully at home, December 9, 2017, surrounded by family and loved ones.

Raised in a baseball loving family, she was an avid sports fan. She also loved travel.  As a young adult, she played semi-professional softball with the Utah Shamrocks. Later in life, she enjoyed golfing and shared many outings with friends, grandkids, and dad. She even “won” frequently although scores were rarely kept. Her passion for travel took her to all continents, except Antarctica.

Marion graduated from Davis High. She served an LDS mission to the Eastern States. Her mission reinforced her already strong testimony of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It was in the mission field that she first met Garth Mangum, also then serving as a missionary. Post mission, they reconnected, marrying in the Salt Lake Temple in November 1953.

Their life together led them to years in Boston, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C., before returning to Utah in 1969. An ever-faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Marion served in numerous leadership roles, including service as ward and stake relief society president. She had the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people and could engage even the most recalcitrant individual in conversation.  Ever focused primarily on the nurturing of her children, and in due course, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she found time at different stages to author a book and to manage a small publishing company.

Marion is survived by her brother Irven C.Poll; her sisters-in-law, Elaine, Venice and Barbara Poll; brothers-in-law, Kerry Mangum and Robert Hall; her children and their spouses, Steve and Troba Mangum, Dave and Stevie Mangum, Mary and Jim Murphy, Susie and Chad Gardner, and Holly and Joel Wright; her 18 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren; and former students of Garth’s now regarded by all as adopted family members: Macleans A. Geo Ja-Ja, his wife Florence and their daughter Marilyn, and Newton Miller Aganyemi.

Marion specifically requested that the members of the Mueller Park 5th Ward know of her love and appreciation; and that the staff of Legacy House and A Step Forward Hospice be thanked for their loving care.

Funeral services will be held at the Maple Hills Chapel located at 1320 East 1975 South, Bountiful, Friday December 15th at 11:00 a.m., with calling hours scheduled for Thursday, December 14th 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Utah and 9:30 -10:30 prior to funeral services. Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah.  In lieu of flowers, Marion requested that donations be made to church humanitarian efforts.
