Marjory Bales Starkweather, age 97, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on April 14, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Marjory was born on November 12, 1914 in Caldwell, Kansas, the daughter of Charles Austin Hayes and Elinor Faye Brindley. She received degrees from Topeka High School and Washburn College in Topeka, Kansas. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Library Science.

On June 8, 1940, Marjory and her beloved William Starkweather were married in Topeka, Kansas.

Marjory and Bill lived in Topeka, Kansas; Omaha, Nebraska; Denver, Colorado; and South Bend, Indiana. They retired to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1982.

Marjory worked as a high school librarian in Kansas before she was married and in Omaha and South Bend after raising her son. She loved working with teenagers, telling them jokingly that they were half-baked people. She was an avid reader and she enjoyed a wide-range of topics.

Marjory and Bill were active in the Presbyterian Church in each city where they lived. She enjoyed people, made friends easily, and had many long-term multi-state friendships.

Marjory was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a wonderful grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to cook. She enjoyed entertaining and was a marvelous hostess. She was truly a gentle lady.

Marjory is survived by her son, William (Shauna); granddaughter, Laurel Shepherd (Bobby); grandson, Jonathan; and six great-grandchildren. Marjory was preceded in death by her husband William, her parents, a brother and two sisters.

Marjory’s family wishes to thank the nurses and staff, especially Kelly, at Emeritus for their care and devotion to Marjory during the last years of her life.
