Mark Rulon Duncan

November 22, 1968 — January 21, 2025

Mark Rulon Duncan, 56, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on January 21, 2025 after battling Glioblastoma brain cancer for 17 months.

Mark was born on November 22, 1968, in Carbondale, IL to Rulon and Louise Shirts Duncan. The Duncan family spent 2 years in Provo, UT and 6 years in Richfield, UT before settling in Centerville, UT when Mark was 11. As the eldest of five children, Mark was the leader and protector of his siblings.

He loved playing sports and was on the Viewmont cross country team in high school. Mark especially loved Utah Football. He had season tickets with his brothers and enjoyed taking his girls with him to the games.

After graduating from high school, Mark went to Utah State University for a semester before receiving a call to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Bilbao, Spain. He grew to love the people of Spain through his missionary service. Mark was an active member of his church for his entire life and served in many church positions. He had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and relied on his faith, especially the last 17 months as he came to terms with his mortal journey coming to an end.

After his mission he returned to Utah State and earned his bachelor’s degrees in Business and Spanish. He then went on to receive his MBA from the University of Utah.

Mark always said that 1998 was the best year of his life; the University of Utah basketball team went to the national championship game, the Utah Jazz were in the NBA finals, and he met his wonderful wife, Christine West. They loved going on fun adventures together such as skiing, biking, and traveling. Mark proposed to Christine on the top of the mountain while they were skiing. After nearly a year of dating they were married in the Salt Lake temple on April 17, 1999. Mark and Christine built their home in Kaysville and raised their children there. Mark is the father of three daughters: Kate, Hailey, and Rachel.

Mark was a devoted father and the best “girl dad”. He gladly listened to countless hours of Taylor Swift, High School Musical, and Disney Channel. He came to every dance recital, band concert, and soccer game that he could. Mark made sure his girls knew the rules of football and they too became Utah Football fans. Although he traveled a lot, he made sure to video call every night to talk to his girls.

Mark spent the majority of his career with Weir Group, where he worked for nearly 23 years. Mark’s expertise was in supply chain management, and he excelled because of his attention to detail and knack for making things more efficient. His work allowed him to travel the world and work with people from many different cultures and backgrounds. This allowed him to make many friends and create relationships with his co-workers from around the world. Mark has travelled to all 50 states and to 6 continents.

Mark loved to have fun. Some of his favorite activities were skiing, hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. He loved pulling kids behind the boat on the tube with his self-named maneuvers such as the “Duncan Dollar Sign of Death” and the “Duncan Donut of Doom.” He was a great fisherman and could always catch fish, but he hated eating them. Mark loved skiing in fresh powder and could sniff out pockets of powder like no one else. His life philosophy was to work hard and play harder.

Mark was diagnosed with Glioblastoma in September 2023. In the last year of his life, Mark was able to see his two oldest daughters get married and his youngest receive a mission call.

Mark is survived by his lovely wife Christine, his daughters Kate (Mitchell) Higginson, Hailey (Kalen) Cox, and Rachel Duncan, parents Rulon and Louise Duncan, his siblings Anne (Mike) Spackman, Collin (Brooke) Duncan, Bryan (Jamie) Duncan, Brad (Kelley) Duncan, his father-in-law Brian West, and siblings-in-law Michael (Jennifer) West, Laura (Mike) Schmidt, Alisa (Shawn) Crosland, Stephanie (Cole) Fowler, and many nieces and nephews. Mark is preceded in death by his mother-in-law Lugene West and his brother-in-law David West.
