Biography

Mark Richard Johnson passed away on January 18, 2014 as a result of an automobile accident in Stansbury Park, Utah. Mark was born on May 20, 1976 in Mesa, Arizona to Richard G. Johnson, Jr and Jennifer Smith Johnson the 4th child and youngest son. Mark was an active and fun little boy who loved to play outdoors and was a great skateboarder. When Mark was 16 years old he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia which greatly changed the course of his life. In spite of his illness, he became a vocal advocate for better treatment of those suffering from mental illness. He was privileged to serve as a Welfare Services Missionary for the LDS Church and worked at both the Kaysville and Salt Lake City Bishop’s Storehouses. After his mission he attended the BYU sponsored Joseph Smith Academy in Nauvoo, IL where he gained a deep appreciation for Church history. While there, he met his future wife, Laurie O’Brien whom he married in 2001. They were later divorced.
Mark worked at Tai Pan Trading where the owner, Nick Stewart, took a special interest in Mark and they became the best of friends. Mark was a licensed falconer and trained and flew many birds. His other interests included hiking, writing and spending time with his beloved dog and companion, Rey. Mark loved his nieces and nephews and was a great uncle.
Mark married Nadine Hall on July 2, 2013 and they enjoyed going on walks with their dogs, watching movies and listening to music. Nadine was a loving and caring companion to Mark.
We would especially like to thank Bishop Jason Rowley of the Porter Way Ward in Stansbury Park for the many hours of counsel and friendship that he lovingly gave to Mark.
Mark is survived by his wife, parents and siblings: Jyl (Troy) Pattee, Jeff (Joanna), Cari (Jonah) McBride, Melinda and Brooke as well as his nieces and nephews: Chase and Connor Pattee, Drew, Amber and Emma Johnson, and Simon, Emily, Noelle and Elliot McBride, his Grandfather, George Norris Smith, Lisa McComas Griffin and many aunts, uncles and cousins who were all so kind to Mark.
He is also survived by Nadine’s daughter and son: Monaca Pearl (Jason) Gilbert and her children Katelynn, Michael and Miranda and her son Robert Lance Gleason.
In lieu of flowers contributions to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) or NAMI Utah or any animal shelter would be appreciated.
