Mark Wardrop MacKay passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack while taking photos of mountain goats with his older brother, Lyndon, in the Uintah Mountains on Monday, March 8, 2021. He returned to the arms of his loving Savior doing what he loved most–enjoying the outdoors in the mountains with family. As a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and son, his stalwart dedication to family, God and Jesus Christ will leave a lasting impact on his posterity for years to come. He will be sorely missed.
Mark was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 4, 1950 to Albert Carlisle and Leone Wardrop MacKay. Mark lived most of his life in Davis County, Utah where he attended Bountiful High School. After successfully completing his mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Carolina-Virginia Mission, he married Penny Karen Hubbard on August 22, 1972.
He attended the University of Utah and graduated in biology and pharmacy. He retired from Primary Children’s Medical Center after working 41 successful years as a pharmacist. He published many scientific articles that positively influenced the medical community and the health and welfare of children all over the world.
Mark is survived by his wife Penny of 49 years and their six children: Matthew (Amy), Mindy (Joe), Michael (Sara), Michelle (Derek), Marie (Ray) and Marc (Whitney). He loved and cherished each of his 18 grandchildren: Spencer, Anna, Grace, Kate, Thomas, MacKayla, Joe, Oliver, Phoebe, Brigham, Solomon, June, Jack, Hank, Mack, Tim, Pete and Sam. He is also survived by his brother Lyndon (Toni) and two sisters Marsha (Steven) and Sherrie (Ken). His parents Carlisle and Leone preceded him in death.
Mark was an avid outdoorsman and photographer, spending countless hours hiking, fishing, camping and hunting. He was the happiest when he was with his family in the mountains. His favorite place was Yellowstone National Park.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he never wavered in his testimony and commitment to the Savior. He served faithfully in many church callings including Bishop, High Councilor, Scoutmaster, Young Men President and Institute Instructor. As recorded in his own family history, he said, “Our goal as a family was to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to respect other people’s values. The greatest joy as parents was to have all of our children present at the temple when Marc received his mission call. It was a joy that fills the immensity of eternity and gives perspective to mortality.”
Due to COVID-19, funeral services will be held for members of the immediate and extended family only on Saturday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at the Centerville 20th Ward Chapel, 210 East 1825 North, Centerville, Utah.
For others who would like to attend the funeral, services will be available on the Russon Brothers Mortuary Facebook page and streamed from the Centerville 20th Ward Chapel at https://youtu.be/dwdBlw2youA. No viewing will be held.
Mark was loved and respected by many. We will miss you dad! ‘Til we meet again.
