I was born in the frigid Upper Peninsula of Michigan, February 4th 1924 of immigrant Finnish parents. My Father was Nestor Valentine Lehto; my Mother was Alexandra or Sandra Heikkila. I was the ninth and last child. I had seven brothers and one sister, five of my siblings died early. When I was three we moved from Michigan to Raymond Washington, there my older brothers taught me how to speak English. When I was five we moved across the mighty Columbia River to the State of Oregon, that is where I grew up and went to school.
One Wednesday in May of 1941, I graduated from high school just three months into my seventeenth year. I graduated as valedictorian, imagine how dumb the other kids must have been, the following Monday I secured an office job and that was the start of my 40 year career in office work. I was a secretary, stenographer and book keeper. I like working with figures the best. I went from comptometer to computer, dinosaur to digital.
I love cats, dancing, reading, watching professional football and figure skating. I love music, Viennese waltzes, polkas, Lawrence Welk and Church hymns. I also love fudge, penuche and divinity, homemade of course.
I was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1950. I moved to Utah in 1951 were I meet Corwin Smith Hancock. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple on January 19th 1953. We lived in California for nine years and then we moved to Bountiful Utah in 1964 and lived there ever since.
I worked in many Church departments, mostly Relief Society. Later I was called to work in foreign name extractions (extracting over 1 million names). I worked on extracting Norwegian, Danish, and Swedish names for 21 years. My Husband and I fulfilled a one year mission in the Washington D.C. South Mission.
My Children are Timothy Alan Hancock, (Susan), Hollis Ann, (Kipp Cabaness), Marcine Sandra, (Joel Brown), Matthew Corwin Hancock, (Julie) and Joel John Hancock, (Cyndi). I have many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren all adorable, I love my family,
I love the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I love all of our friends that we have made here in Bountiful.
