Martha Tess Madsen Porter
1924 ~ 2016
Martha Tess Madsen Porter was born in Shelley, Idaho on December 22, 1924 to Lyman L. Madsen and Melvina Huffaker. Tess passed peacefully on December 16, 2016 at her home in Centerville, surrounded by loved ones. She was reunited with her babe, Ernest Vincent Porter, Jr., her daughter, Candace Tess Porter (Bitter), her parents and siblings.
Tess was loved by all who knew her and her feisty spirit will be greatly missed. She is survived by sister, Lila Beth Madsen Clawson, her beloved son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Laura, her grandchildren Jared, Cami (Aurel), Brissa (Cory), Khyrie (James), James and Ashley and the lights of her life, her great-grandchildren.
Tess was a voracious reader of both scripture and fiction. She loved mysteries, westerns and romance novels, but her favorite book was the word of God. Tess faithfully served a mission for The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Western Canada.
She graduated Shelley High School before attending Stanford University. She left her studies early due to her father’s illness and subsequent passing. She was a reporter for the Deseret News, held various positions with the FBI in San Francisco and Washington DC, for the Department of Defense at Hill Field working on the “Manhattan Project,” and retired as a Davis County clerk.
An Idaho girl through and through, Tess loved potatoes any way they came. She learned to love Laura’s rice, beans and avocado salsa, but stayed true to her roots having a glass of milk with every meal.
