Mary Afton Barclay Morrill 1926-2011
Bountiful: Mary Afton Barclay Morrill, 84 of Bountiful, Utah died Saturday, May 28, 2011 with her husband and loved ones by her side. Mary was born the oldest daughter and second child of her family on July 27, 1926, to Robert Sidney and Jane Dougan Barclay, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Since her father was an immigrant to the United States, Mary and her brothers and sisters eased his homesickness for Scotland by learning to play the bagpipes and dance Scottish folk dances. Her father took Mary and her siblings all over the Salt Lake Valley where they performed for audiences and marched in parades. She graduated from West High School in Salt Lake in 1942. Her mother died when Mary was seventeen years of age, and she became a surrogate mother to her two brothers and one sister. She used the secretarial skills she obtained in high school in her jobs at the LDS Church Offices and the General Relief Society Office. Shortly after World War II ended, she met and married a young serviceman returning from the war, Dwain Ross Morrill, in November of 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. To this union three children were born, Dwain obtained post-service training to become an expert carpenter and he built all the homes in which he and Mary and their children lived. Mary used her skills at interior decorating and landscaping to make each home attractive. Mary worked as the school secretary at various schools in the Salt Lake School District and in the school district office itself, and eventually, retired from Riley Elementary School. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions throughout her life, including Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society Spiritual Living Leader, and teacher for various auxiliaries. Dwain and she served a mission to St. George, Utah. Mary loved and cherished others. She touched the lives of many by sharing her talents whenever she had the opportunity to serve. Her infectious laughter and good sense of humor carried her through many of lifes difficulties and through years of ill health. Mary was a gifted story teller, and each, like the story of her own life, carried a message to uplift and inspire. She will be greatly missed. In her later years, Dwain and she divided their time between Bountiful and St. George to take advantage of the good climate of each place. Mary is survived by her husband, Dwain Ross Morrill, her three children: Jane (Charles) Driscoll, Andrew (Holley) Morrill, and Leland (Sharlene) Morrill, her sister Juanita (Bruce) Wainwright, 15 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by all of them. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, Robert A. Barclay and David L. Barclay, and one grandchild. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the North Canyon 5th Ward, 2505 South Davis Blvd. Friends may call on Thursday, June 2, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, and at the Ward prior to services from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Interment will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Bountiful.
