Our beloved Nana, Mother, Aunt, Sister, Neighbor, and Friend passed peacefully through the veil on Sunday, May 26th, to be reunited with her eternal companion, their oldest son, her parents, her siblings, and countless family and friends.
Mary was born the second of four children to Ernest and Louise Helton in Savannah, Georgia. A Southern Belle through and through, Mary loved all things beautiful and sought to bring love and beauty to the world around her. She was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mary had few conversations that did not lead to an acknowledgment of her Heavenly Father and to the blessings that He had bestowed upon her.
In 1958, she was sealed for time and eternity to Owen Sweeten in the Salt Lake Temple. Together, they brought three sons into the world. She was a devoted wife, standing by Owen’s side as he twice battled cancer, and a stalwart mother, raising three boys alone after Owen’s passing in 1980.
Mary spent the majority of her professional career working as a secretary for the FAA in the medical clinic. While she enjoyed her work, she enjoyed the friendships and interactions with those she worked with even more.
Mary found love and companionship again later in life, marrying Gerald (Jerry) Maughan in 1993. Jerry and Mary found comfort and understanding in each other. They spent fourteen years together laughing, loving, serving, and even working together until Jerry’s passing in 2007.
Mary loved being a mother and being “Nana.” Her Shrimp Salad and Fruit Salad were always popular requests by her grandkids, as was Chocolate Cream Pie (even if the latter always came from Marie Callender's). Her love, devotion, and testimony of Jesus Christ stand as examples and standards for her posterity to follow.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Helton and Louise Lavender; her older sister, Dorothy Young; her younger brother, Jack Helton; her younger sister, Martha Hepner; her husband, Owen; her eldest son, Derek; and her husband, Gerald Maughan. She is survived by her sons Blake (Melissa) and Michael (Kari); five grandsons; and seven granddaughters.
