Matthew Thomas Quist, 25, returned home to his Heavenly Parents Tuesday, February 14, 2017 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a beloved son, brother, grandson, cousin, and friend. We love him and miss him. We are grateful for the time we spent with him here in mortality and look forward to being with him again. He had struggles over the last few years and couldn’t find his way out of the darkness that surrounded him. We can find comfort in knowing that now he is no longer burdened with the pain that consumed him in this mortal life. We know that his spirit is at peace and that he has been reunited with his sister in Heaven and many others who love him. Matthew was born January 4, 1992 in Murray, Utah to Jerald Bennion and Michelle Hewitson Quist. He was the second of three children. He lived in Sugar House until moving to Bountiful at the age of 4. He attended Muir Elementary, Mueller Park Jr. High, and Bountiful High School making many friends along the way. He graduated from Bountiful High in 2010 where he played football and lacrosse. He was currently registered at Salt Lake Community College where he was planning on getting a Business degree. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in several Aaronic Priesthood presidencies in the Young Men’s program growing up. He also earned his Duty of God Award through this program. He became an Eagle Scout at age 15 and enjoyed camping and spending time with Troop 263. He served a two year, LDS mission in the Buenos Aires West Mission (2011-2013) where he learned Spanish and performed many good works for the people of Argentina. Although he struggled with the strict regimented mission life, he always had time for investigators and a love for the people of Argentina. He returned home with honor and his personal testimony was a great strength to him and those who loved him. He loved sports and participated on many different teams throughout his younger years. He enjoyed football, lacrosse, baseball, basketball, and soccer. He followed in his father’s footsteps and even umpired little league baseball and basketball as a youth. Matthew was a true University of Utah fan and enjoyed attending Ute football and basketball games. He especially enjoyed and looked forward to the yearly road trips with his dad and friends to cheer the Utes to victory. Go Utes! He was passionate, loved to debate, and was interested in politics and current events. He was very intelligent and found interests in many different things. He loved history, enjoyed playing video games online with friends, and target shooting with family and friends. He was a hard worker and always willing to do what was asked of him. He worked diligently at his jobs over the years, striving to always do his best. He was currently working at Aero Tech Manufacturing with his dad where he was surrounded by many great co-workers. Matthew had a generous and loving heart and helped out many people. He was a great and loyal friend who would do anything for someone in need. His passing leaves a great void in the lives of all who loved him. He is preceded in death by his older, infant sister Samantha Suzanne Quist.
