Our beloved Mother, Virginia Kershaw as she is known to her family and friends, died peacefully in her sleep on December 16, 2017, after a long and wonderful life of service and fostering love within her family and circle of friends. She was 91.
Virginia was born on June 1, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to John Franklin Wood and Maude Eleanor Davenport. She was the fourth child in a family of 7 siblings, the proverbial middle child. Her father died when she was six years old and she was raised by her single mother and grandparents, who moved in to help take care of the children; other extended family; and of course, her sisters and brothers. Through the tough times they pulled together to keep food on the table, a roof over their heads, and they loved Sunday when they could sing along to music being played in their home. Virginia always loved to sing. All the children were encouraged to play an instrument and mother played the viola.
Virginia graduated from West High, in Salt Lake City, Utah right in the middle if World War II. She went to work at The Arsenal in Davis County to help in the war effort. Through a girlfriend of Virginia's, she was encouraged to write to a service man to help build moral. She addressed the letter to Chauncey Kershaw, a friend of her girlfriend, and asked if he knew someone who would enjoy getting letters from home. He said how about me. Thus, began their friendship that grew into a courtship, and they were married January 12, 1946 when Chauncey came home from the war. They made their home in Bountiful, Utah.
Chauncey and Virginia were proud parents of three children, Susan Dalpiaz (Louis) of Salt Lake City, UT, Judy Mann (Brian) of Farmington, UT; and Daniel Kershaw (Vicki) of Farmington, UT. Eight grandchildren, and fifteen great- grandchildren. Virginia is survived by her children, grandchildren and her sister Rosemary Waters.
Virginia learned accounting in school and used that skill to support Chauncey in his business. When the family moved to Farmington, New Mexico she continued as an accountant for a Motel there. She continued to work when the family moved to Santa Rosa, California, in a yarn and craft store. There she learned to knit beautiful sweaters. After 6 years in California, she convinced Chauncey to move back to Bountiful, UT to be near family. She continued to work for JC Penny's, and retired from Lakeview Hospital after working there many years.
Virginia kept close ties with her sisters and brothers. Be it laughing, talking, or plotting their next adventure she was most happy when she was with them.
Our family would like to thank Adagio Hospice Elite Salon and Welcome Home Care center for their loving care of our mother during her last days. Condolences can be sent to the family at The Bountiful Russon mortuary web site.
