Maurine passed away early in the morning October 19, 2015. She was born in Salt Lake City on June 19, 1916 to Irvin Simon Noall and Sarah Elizabeth Walter Noall. She was the proud older sister of Irvin Walter Noall, Phyllis Robison, Norma Foxley, and Kenneth LeRoy Noall. She married Marion Grover Hegsted in the Salt Lake Temple on June 5, 1945 and moved to the Hegsted house on Douglas Street. She was a loving mother and a caring neighbor who was active in her church and lived the gospel principles.
She graduated from West High School and continued her education at the University of Utah with a B.S. degree in elementary education in 1932. After teaching for two years, she completed her master’s degree in food and nutrition and taught at the University of Utah. She stayed home with her four children for several years before resuming her teaching career at St. Mary’s High School and Holy Cross Hospital nursing program. She returned to the University of Utah in 1957 where she taught foods and nutrition to two generations of students before retiring at age 70. She loved teaching and interacting with students and the nutrition community.
Maurine was a regular consultant to the local newspapers who wanted her “take” on nutrition information. As a member and officer of the Utah Dietetic Association, Homemakers of Professional Standing (HOPS), Omicron Nu and Delta Kappa Gamma, she was an example of an involved community leader. After being diagnosed with macular degeneration, she was actively involved with the Moran Eye Center orientation for people losing their eyesight. Maurine collaborated with two friends, Helen Thackeray and Beth Nelms Brown in writing The Mormon Family Cookbook.
Maurine and Marion loved the outdoors and took their family camping and hiking in all the western national parks. One of her fondest trips was driving the 1300 miles of gravel roads of the Alcan highway to Alaska where they caught salmon and made wild bearberry and blueberry jam while chasing after their first grandchild.
After losing Marion in 1969, she continued to explore the world co-leading a group of teachers and students through Europe investigating childcare facilities, food markets, and food and nutrition programs. Additional foreign travels included two more trips to Europe, China, and South America. She loved traveling around the United States as she visited her children who were scattered around the country.
She is survived by her siblings Irvin Walter Noall and Kenneth LeRoy Noall; children Helen H. Aguilar (Albert), Susan Beckman (Robert G. deceased), Maren Hegsted, Kent Noall Hegsted (Barbara Trepiccione); nine grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren with twins due in February.
