Melvin Erickson Thayne was born on January 25th, 1925 in Farmington, Utah to William James Thayne and Irene Erickson Thayne. From the time he was young he was known for his reliability, stamina and dedication to hard work. His talents were many, as he excelled in school, student leadership and music. Throughout his life he was highly respected for his honesty and integrity, as well as for his ready laugh and gentle heart. A product of the depression, thrift, discipline and gratitude were driving forces in his life. He was strong and solid, tender and humble; he was the quintessential gentleman.
Mel was class president at both Weber State College and Utah State University. Upon graduation he completed a master’s degree in history from Stanford University. His lifelong love of history was further fueled by his years of service in the Transportation Corps of the U.S. Army, where he proudly served in the European theater of WWII, earning five battle stars.
As the owner of Thayne Realty, he won the respect and trust of many. He was known for his high standard of excellence, his genuine love of people and his tireless work ethic. He served as President of the Salt Lake City Board of Realtors and President of the Utah State Association, as well as Vice President of the National Association of Realtors. As a leader, mentor, teacher and friend he touched the lives of many.
Highly dedicated to his faith, Mel served as an LDS bishop and many years as a sealer in the Salt Lake Temple, cherishing each of the countless marriages he performed. His genuine love and dedication to both principles and people earned the deep respect of all he met.
Mel’s greatest joy in life came from his family. The courtship of his beloved wife of 65 years, Emma Lou Warner Thayne, began at Pineview Dam where he owned a boating and water-skiing business. Their five daughters, and later sons-in-laws and many grandchildren, made their happiest memories on the boat they loved. He was adored as “Uncle Mel” to nieces and nephews, as Grandpa or “Pups” to his family flock.
Mel’s sweetness, his infectious laugh, his lovingkindness and his dedication to life-long learning will leave a profound impact on generations. Put on that waterski Pups, and find your sweetheart.
