Melvin David “Mel” Huefner, age 70, died in his home in Salt Lake City sometime before July 29, 2024.
Mel was a free-spirited, kind, and compassionate man. He was born August 14, 1953, in Salt Lake City, the son of Fred Huefner and Orma Banks Petersen Huefner. He graduated from West High School in 1971 and then attended Utah State University. He worked several years as a maintenance engineer for the Salt Lake City School District. He eventually went on to receive a bachelor’s degree and then a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Utah. He then worked as a counselor for the Utah Juvenile Justice System, working with youthful offenders in Salt Lake County until his retirement.
Mel credited Alcoholics Anonymous with getting him sober and he passed away with 41 years of sobriety. He carried the message to countless others in both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, having led many group meetings, including at the Utah State Prison and online, as well as helping as a volunteer at the Central Office.
He enjoyed riding his motorcycle with the Free Riders and with Bikers Against Child Abuse. He loved the outdoors, including spending time in and around Cache Valley and at his trailer at Sourdough.
He was always willing to talk with someone who needed a friend.
He is survived by a brother, Carl (Ann) Huefner, of Bountiful, as well as a niece, Sara (Craig) Wallace, of Syracuse, and a nephew, Matt Huefner, of Washington, D.C., to whom Mel was always kind and generous. His kindness, service, and presence will be missed immensely.
Mel’s body will be cremated for burial later. No public service or visitation is planned.
