After a long and courageous battle with a debilitating condition, Michael Scott Gulbrandsen departed this life on October 3, 2014. He is dearly beloved by his parents, family, and friends. Michael is the son of Steve and June Gulbrandsen. He was born August 5, 1989 in Walnut Creek, California, and lived with his family in Walnut Creek; Dublin, Ohio; Naperville, Illinois; and Bountiful, Utah.
Mike was a gifted guitar player who brought much joy to family and friends with his music. From the time Mike was a young child, he loved little children and they loved him. He especially loved his 5 nieces and his nephew. They remember with fondness his putting up a tree-rope swing for them, going to amusement parks with him, and jumping on the trampoline and playing numerous games together.
Mike had a wide range of interests and expertise. He was an avid hiker and enjoyed being surrounded by the beauty of nature. He loved to study and learn, with special focus on world religions and philosophy, and nutrition. He was an “A” student at Dixie State College before his condition rendered him unable to continue. As a young teenager, he won a school-wide chess contest and led a group of his friends in building a multi-story tree house which was the envy of everyone in the area (except for the Park Service).
In his last years, he spoke often of truths he found in eastern religions and in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, of his belief in life after death, and of his deep conviction of the resurrection. His parents and siblings love him with all of their hearts and are extremely grateful for their time with him on earth.
Mike is survived by his parents; his 5 siblings Kristina, Steve, Kim (Kris) Heaton, Joseph (Kayla), and Daniel (Lindsey); his grandfather Vernon Lawrence; his grandmother Lois Gulbrandsen Daly; 14 uncles and aunts, 6 nieces and nephews, and 33 cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, June Lawrence; his grandfather, Norman Gulbrandsen; and his cousin, Ryan Gulbrandsen.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., preceded by a viewing from 12:30 -1:30 pm, Saturday, October 11, 2014, at the LDS chapel, 540 North 12th East, Bountiful, Utah 84010. Online guestbook at www.russonmortuary.com
