Michael Scott Roberts

May 2, 1969 — July 21, 2022

“Not all who wander are lost.”

Michael Scott Roberts was a dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. He left us suddenly and far too soon on July 21, 2022. Across the wall of his office, Mike had written these lines from a Dylan Thomas poem:

“Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

That is exactly what Mike did.

Mike was born to A. Samuel Roberts and Terry Kay Roberts on May 2, 1969 in Provo, Utah. From his earliest days, he had an illuminating smile and a tremendous sense of humor that filled our lives with laughter. Watching him lovingly banter with his siblings has provided us with happy memories for a lifetime. Mike was blessed with a keen, sharp mind that could grasp mathematical and electrical concepts that would challenge us all. He was also blessed with a gruff eloquence, a lifelong love of learning, and an unrelenting wit.

While in high school, Mike met the love of his life, Wendy Elaine Kennard. She became his “rock” in all things. Following his LDS mission to Indiana, Mike returned home and waited for Wendy to complete her mission in Taiwan. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on May 21, 1991. Mike and Wendy then began their family of eight children which has since grown to include daughters-in-law and grandchildren.

Mike’s hobbies and passions included photography, historical research, and-most of all-riding his bike. He would often ride up to 1,000 miles in a month. Doing so brought great serenity to his restless soul, and Mike found meaning in endless wandering and exploration. A friend once labeled him the “greatest explorer of our time.”

Upon Mike’s passing, one sister-in-law said through her tears, “Mike is such a good, good man with such a big heart.” He was a man of integrity, honesty, and generosity. One only had to ask Mike for help to know he would respond immediately and fulfill what was required. We know that Mike will continue to watch over us until we are reunited once again.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy, and their children, Joseph (and his partner Brooke), Paul (and his wife Sarah), Matthew (and his wife Hannah), Adam Kimball (and his wife Sonora), Rachel, Samuel, Emily, Andrew, and his two precious granddaughters, Addie and Mary. Mike cherished being a grandfather, and he often said that his granddaughters helped him heal and rekindle his hope for the world.

He is also survived by his parents, Sam and Terry Roberts, and siblings, Burton, Gregory (and his wife Melisa), Amylyn Baird (and her husband Michael), Adam (and his wife Kenya), and his sister-in-law, DaNell Barton. Lastly, he is survived by his mother-in-law, Elaine Kennard, and his father-in-law, Lee Kennard.

A viewing will be held at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, on Friday, July 29, 2022 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 30, at the Orchard 13th Wardhouse, 261 East Center Street, North Salt Lake, where a viewing will be held from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Mike and celebrate his life can make a donation in his name to The Road Home as Mike’s compassion for those in need was a defining characteristic of his philosophy, art, and actions.
