Our loving husband and father Michael Scott Sampson passed away at home in Bountiful, Utah on January 18th 2021. Mike was born on July 16th, 1942 in Detroit, MI. He was raised in Lancaster County, PA and often referred to Pennsylvania as home. Mike served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corp. enlisted from 1961-1965. He is a Vietnam Veteran. In 1962 Mike met Dorothy Irene Goodyear at a party. The lights were low so he asked her to walk over to the light of the refrigerator to see what she looked like. Happily, he married Dottie 6 months later on March 30th, 1963. This March they would be celebrating their 58th anniversary.
Mike loved the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, shooting and camping in his younger years. He had a good sense of humor and was often cracking jokes in casual conversation. He also loved to tease the grandkids with cute nicknames and assign heroic attributes to each of them. He was a good story teller and used story telling to teach his children and grandchildren valuable lesson for life. He expressed deep love and kind words of encouragement for each of us to do and be the better version of ourselves. Mike looked out for those who were often overlooked. He was the guy who would buy a homeless man breakfast at McDonalds and then go sit with him to talk. He had a good listening ear and an uncanny ability to connect with pretty much anyone he met. Mike had a long battle with a variety of health issues, yet he met each of them with dignity and little complaining. As a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he had a testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We will miss you Dad. Till we meet again, we’ll look for the jokes in everyday conversation, share the stories we learned to help us through rough patches and practice the patience we need till we can once again share a loving embrace.
Mike is preceded in death by his mother Marian Evelyn (Wright) Robertson. He is survived by his wife Dottie Sampson, children Jim (Gayla) German, Jennifer (Chet) Loftis, Sean (Mary Jane) Sampson, Kellie (Carson) Mellott and Katie Lueck. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren.
Per Mikes request, we will not have a funeral at this time. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Utah Food Bank or to the LDS Missionary Fund. Interment at the Orem City Cemetery.
