Mildred Lavender

April 2, 1917 — January 13, 2011

Mildred B. Lavender, age 93, passed away on January 13, 2011 in Bountiful, Utah.

She was born in Salt Lake City, Utah to Joseph and Edna Blackham on April 2, 1917, one of four children. She was raised in a loving family and learned the value of hard work and family closeness, traits she passed on to her posterity.

Mildred graduated from West High School in 1934 and worked in civil service, retiring from Hill Field Air Force Base after 20 years.

Early in her life she developed a love of sports, especially softball and participated as a member of a team that formed the League for Salt Lake Women’s Recreational Softball. She played for the Utah Shamrock Softball Team and enjoyed several years playing teams from around the country, including some men’s teams.

Mildred was an active member of the L.D.S. Church and served as a teacher in Primary, Sunday School, Relief Society and as a stake and ward sports director for over 20 years. She served a mission in the Texas San Antonio Mission and worked in the German Extration Program. She was a part-time missionary at the Church Family History Center for over 30 years. She was also a proud member of the Rose Park Neighborhood Mobile Watch.

Survived by sons, Craig (Marilyn), Bruce (Sharlene), daughter Marilyn Hancock (Lee), sister Dorothy Anderson, six grandchildren, Shawn, Marcy, Greg, Kyle, Jennifer, Quinn and twelve great-grandchildren. She was proud of her family and loved them very much. Preceded in death by her parents, brother Eugene Blackham and sister Lois Sanderson.

Mildred’s family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Place, Lakeview Hospital, Vista Hospice and Dr. Joseph Jensen for the comfort and care they provided.

Funeral services Monday, Jan. 17th, at noon, at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main St., Bountiful, Utah, where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to services. A viewing will be held Sunday Jan. 16th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary.
