Milton John Hess completed his mortal journey on June 12, 2014, age 99, at his home in Farmington, Utah. He was born January 7, 1915, in Farmington to Milton Miller and Margaret Jane (Steed) Hess. Milton married Julia Fern Gregory on February 24, 1939, in the Salt Lake Temple. He leaves behind four sons and two daughters: Tad Gregory (Diana), Gerald E (Carolyn), Stephen Harrill (Vicki), Christine (Bruce) Hale, Anne (Robert) Clark, and Paul Wallace (Ann), 38 grandchildren, and 96 ½ great-grandchildren.
He attended Farmington Elementary school through the 8th grade and graduated from Davis High School in 1933. Working at Lagoon from age 11, he saved for, valued and encouraged education, graduating from the University of Utah and then from Law School in 1939. He practiced law for 35 years including many years as Farmington City Attorney and 18 years as Davis County Attorney. During World War II he represented the Church and his country as a Navy Chaplain, rank of lieutenant commander, serving in the Aleutian Islands for two years and then in San Diego until the wars end. He presided as bishop of the Farmington Ward, President of the Davis Stake, first President of the Australia West Mission (68-71), counselor in the Ogden Temple Presidency (80-84), first President of the Sydney Australia Temple (84-87), Patriarch in the Davis and Farmington Stakes and Sealer in the Bountiful Temple. He had a great love for the people of Australia. As a family we treasure Dad for his loving kindness, integrity, and generosity and devotion to God and His Kingdom. His influence for good will always be felt in our lives.
Milton is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Gloria H. Hess Rice and Dorothy G. Killpack. He was preceded in death by his wife, infant son John Milton Hess, daughter-in-law Martha Zollinger Hess, grandson Samuel Paul Hess, brothers Wallace E. Hess, Maxwell G. Hess, sister Claire Smith, and two great-grandchildren Iris Thompson and Joshua McArthur.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2014 at the Steed Creek Chapel, 347 South 200 West, Farmington, Utah. Friends and family may call on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Russon Brothers Mortuary 1941 North Main, Farmington, Utah from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Monday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the funeral. Interment-Farmington City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the LDS Humanitarian Fund.
