Milton K. Shaum

December 23, 1929 — June 25, 2015

Milton K. Shaum, passed away at his home in Bountiful, Utah on Thursday, June 25th 2015 from complications from skin cancer.

Milton (Milt) was born December 23, 1929 in Ogden, Utah to Marjorie and Milton J. Shaum.  A hardworking boy, Milt knew the fields and orchards of Ogden well.  As a teen he made the calls as a quarterback and played the trumpet in the school band during his years at Ogden High School.  He served an LDS missions in Japan from 1950-1953, and returned to Japan in 1954 to fulfill his military assignment with the 500th Military Intelligence Group in the Translation Section.  He married the love of his life, our mother, Joyce Geary in July of 1954 in the LDS Logan Temple.  Dad attended Weber State College and the University of Utah, where he received a Masters in Social Work.   He held many positions in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, including Bishop and High Councilman.  In 1995 he and our mother served a mission in Tokyo, South Japan.  Dad had many Japanese friends, and enjoyed hosting dinners in the home—cooking up oodles of amazing beef sukiyaki!  He also had a musical gift.  If you could sing the melody, he could find the pitch-perfect harmony.  A lover of the outdoors, his best memories were fishing for trout on Scofield Reservoir with his brother Jack, his sons Ryan and Brent, and many nephews.  Dad’s life work was all about helping others—in his community, and his church.  He was beloved by many.   As a Social Worker for the Davis School District he helped guide many young adults in their life path.  Always gregarious, dad had the keen ability to strike up a conversation with a stranger at a grocery store, to spark a new friendship in an elevator.  Sayonara dad.  Thank you for singing to us on the long, hot, family vacation road-trips, for saying “yes” to silliness, and for sharing your big, BIG heart with the world!!

We would like to thank the staff of Rocky Mountain Hospice (our Hospice Angels) for their incredible care and support.

Milton K. Shaum is survived by his four siblings, Carol Jean Brewer (Joseph), Jack Shaum (Jean), Joanne S. King (Glen), Judy Bunn (Joseph), six children, Megan Crowley (Joseph Judd), Brent Shaum (Kathy), Sally Shaum, Ryan Shaum (Debbie), Jayne Shaum, Stacy Traeden, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Shaum and parents, Milton J. and Marjorie Shaum.
