Milt was born on November 20, 1946 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born to Milton Lewis Winward Sr. and Aretta Oliphant Winward. Milt attended South High School. In Milt’s school years, he met his lifelong friend/brother, Glen Mills. As an only child, Milt would have never been drafted into the military. However, at 20 years old, out of pure love for his country and a strong desire to protect the freedoms of those he loved, he chose to serve in the United States Marine Corps. He served an honorable tour of duty in the Vietnam War. Once a Marine, always a Marine. Soon after returning home he became employed with the Salt Lake City Water Department as an engineering technician/inspector. Working 40+ years before retiring. It was here he met his work brothers: Ryan Bradshaw, Matt Briggs, Kenny Reeve & Doug Glen.
It was while working at the water department he met the eternal love of his life Sandra Snarr. They were married in Evanston, Wyoming on November 4, 1974. They were sealed for all time and eternity in the Salt Lake City temple in November of 1975. Sandra was his sweetheart and the one dying request he made was to show after nearly 50 years together he would choose her again and asked to marry her again in a vow renewal ceremony. Together they had 3 children: Monica, Matthew, Melissa and from their love his family grew. He was later gifted with the title of grandpa, and he cherished his 5 granddaughters: Jessie, Jordan, Alex (Kaylie), Kiana, and Stella.
Milt was most at peace enjoying nature. He loved: fishing, tying his own flies to use while fly fishing with his kids, hiking, camping, running rivers, canoeing, bird watching, knowing native plants, and their purposes as well as insects. He loved a good lightening and rainstorm or star gazing around the campfire. Milt enjoyed playing pranks, wood working, gardening, leather stamping, computers, and yes for those of you old enough he did know DOS. He was very mechanically inclined and when fixing things, he would do so to perfection and then some no matter the time or effort it would take. He enjoyed collecting books about church history, military excursions, and history in general. He collected magazines regarding his interests to always learn and improve mastering his craft. He loved watching old westerns or shows honoring and respecting the Native American Culture (which he was very fascinated with) as well as military shows & sports. Milt spent many years serving in the Boy Scouts. He served as a Scout Master and for the Salt Lake City Boy Scout Council. He found honor in helping several boys, including his own son, reach the highest level of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed listening to several genres of music as well as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Milt spent the last 4 years of his life at the William E. Christoffersen Veterans Home. He made friends with his brothers and sisters in arms and was very well thought of amongst them. We would like to thank the amazing, loving, caring staff who took such great care of our husband and dad during these many years. There were several of you who will always remain special to our dad and family. We love you for your care, time, service and dignity you gave our dad and also your service to those who served. Thank you to all those who have sacrificed and served, our dads beloved country, with many blessings and love to all of you!
