On July 27, 2015, Minnie Jane Welch Egan Lewis returned to her heavenly home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born February 15, 1931 to Samuel Welch and Minnie Jane Hughes, the 5th of 7 children: Samuel (D), Newel, Naola (D), Jonathan (D), Minnie, Thomas (D), and Garth. She was born and grew up in Harper, Utah. Minnie met Willes Gerald Egan while attending the U of U, and they were married on July 14, 1954 in the Logan Temple. They had 9 children together: David (Karen), Ronald (Peggy), Mark (Marianne), Timothy (Lora), Sterling (Stacy), Michael (Virginia), Maria Shumway (D), Spencer (Melinda), & Camille (Davin) Hansen. Jerry & Minnie divorced in 1972 with the kids ranging from 1 to 16 yrs old. Minnie devoted herself to raising her children with love in the gospel. She was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life and served in many different callings. She was a pioneer woman in so many ways and showed the strength and character of her forbears raising 9 children on her own. Minnie graduated from the U of U and taught elementary school for 30 years. She loved children and was a motivating and inspirational influence to hundreds of kids that were placed in her care during their early developmental years.
Minnie was very blessed to be sealed to Derwin Lynn Lewis in the Jordan River Temple on April 19, 1986. Derwin has 4 children: Michael (Julie) Lewis, Sharon (Brent) Christensen, Diane (Lynn) Manning, and Annette (James) Spainhower – creating a large blended family. Minnie and Derwin served in the Bountiful, Utah Temple for 14 years, served several full-time missions together, and made many lifelong friends. They also loved to travel and made wonderful memories together. She loved their 58 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her family. She hosted countless family parties and cooked for huge crowds. She always sweetened any gathering with her presence and with candy – she loved to share her peanut M&M’s!
Minnie’s faith in God was unshakable. She truly fought a good fight and remained valiant to the end. We honor her memory and her legacy of teacher, church volunteer, friend, and mother.
