Mona Winger Gustavson passed away on October 26, 2019 in Kaysville, Utah at the age of 86. She was the daughter of Karsten and Hansine Winger who immigrated to Salt Lake City with their children from Oslo Norway after World War II. Mona was 7 years old when the Germans occupied Norway and was 12 when it was finally liberated.
In 1951, Mona married Karl O. Gustavson, a handsome young man who had immigrated to Utah from Lulea, Sweden. They met at a Scandinavian dance which sparked their marriage of 57 years which produced three beautiful children – Karl Robin, Susan and Scott. Norwegian was the language spoken in their home.
Mona, her sister Aase, brother Kjell and their respective families spent considerable time together in activities such as traveling, camping, boating at Bear Lake and snow skiing. Their Norwegian traditions have continued to new generations, including extravagant dinners on Christmas Eve, dancing around the Christmas tree and visits from the Julen Nessen (Santa).
When Karl died in 2008 from cancer, Mona stepped up remarkably well to new challenges such as relearning how to drive. Fortunately, most people were understanding although she drove rather slowly and had a few dings. In 2017, Mona suffered a small stroke which caused her to lose her voice and impaired her ability to care for herself. Despite the challenges of declining health, Mona continued to be a caring matriarch for her family. She will be missed by all.
Mona is survived by her brother Kjell Winger; children, Karl R. Gustavson (Debby), Susan Solomon (Jim) and Scott Gustavson. She has 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 1 at 11:00am at Russon Brothers Mortuary located at 1941 North Main in Farmington, Utah. A viewing will be held at the Mortuary from 9:30 – 10:30am immediately preceding the funeral.
