Myrna Mayes

Myrna Freer Mayes age 76, died February 25, 2020 after a long illness.

Myrna was born December 3, 1943 in Burley, Idaho to Grant Edmund Freer and Elinor Lucille Mead Freer. She was raised in Bountiful, Utah and attended school there, where she was a cheerleader at her junior high school, was student body vice president and was on the softball team. Myrna graduated with honors from Bountiful High School. She attended Utah State University where she received a degree in education. Myrna started teaching home economics at Layton High School in 1972 and also started the pep club and was the cheerleader advisor for 19 years. She later earned a master’s degree from the University of Utah in counseling and was a counselor at Layton High School. She earned another master’s degree in administration, and was the assistant principal at Layton High School until she retired in 2006. Her favorite things to do were sewing and quilting, traveling and road trips with her best friend and sister, Linda. She could not wait to get to the bookstore on Tuesday for a new book (that’s when the new books get released!) And she loved clothes shopping for a great new outfit! Myrna married Richard Mayes and later divorced. She is survived by her two sons; Brad (Dee) Mayes of Layton, Jason (Kristy) Mayes of Ogden, seven grandchildren; Jaxson, Samantha, Ashlie, Boston, Keaton, Zander, and Weston, two great grandchildren; Tregan and Paizley. Also surviving are her three sisters; Vola (Jess) Evans, Linda (Bob) Hutchinson, and Karen (Rod) Hitt.

Preceded in death by her father, Grant and mother, Lucile.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Fairfield Village in Layton, Inspiration Hospice, and her nurse, Donette, for their incredible care, compassion and empathy as she progressed through her disease.

A viewing will be held at Russon Mortuary February 28, 1941 N. Main Street, Farmington, Utah 84025 from 6 to 8 pm. The funeral will be held Saturday February 29 at the Snow Creek Ward LDS Church located at 865 N. 1150 E. Layton, Utah 84040 at 11:00 am with a viewing one hour prior.

Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 S. 200 W. Bountiful, Utah 84010.
