Norman Leroy Beers

Norman passed away peacefully at age 90 in his home in Centerville, Utah, on January 22, 2025. He was born in Oilfield, California, to Allan Leroy Beers and Helen Lee Noble. He was preceded in death by both parents, Allan and Helen. Also, Sisters Alene (Beers) Pederson and Loretta (Beers) Smith, son David Allan Beers, granddaughter Kylie Marsh, and grandson Landon Lane Marsh. He is survived by brothers, Ron Lester Beers, Wayne Allan Beers, and sister Jeannie (Beers) Vaughn. He married Nina Carr on November 7, 1958, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They had 8 children; Carolyn Beers, Janet (Tim) Scalise, Valerie (Mike) Shaw, Marjorie Marsh, David Allan Beers, Annette (Wayne) Rappleye, Marianne (Wayne) Patrick, Matthew Vernon Beers, 25 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

When he was 8 years old the family moved back to Utah where he graduated from Davis High School in 1952, and later graduated from the University of Utah. Throughout his school years he actively competed in firearm competitions, where he took 1st place in the state competition. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in New Zealand where he gained a great love for the Māori people. During his life and even when he was 90 years old he would sing songs and speak in the Māori language. He served in the Army as a 1st lieutenant in field artillery. His career was spent working for the State of Utah in the Employment Security Department. He was instrumental in opening up several offices in neighboring cities. He retired in 1991 and immediately started to serve in the Boy Scouts Organization where he could play out his love for the outdoors and gun safety. He served on the Greater Salt Lake Council, taught at many camp schools, and ran the gun range for Camp Tomahawk for several years. He received the Silver Beaver Award in 1989. Together Norman and Nina served in both, the Salt Lake and Bountiful temples for 32 years. During that time, they also served 2 temple missions in Nauvoo, Illinois. The first mission was to help with the open house and train new temple workers, and during the second mission they served in the temple presidency. He was one of the original founders of the local chapter of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers. He served in many other church positions including the Stake Sunday School Presidency, Ward Bishoprics as 1st and 2nd councilor and Bishop in the Centerville 1st Ward. He also served as a Stake High Councilor.

He had a great love for music, fishing, hunting, camping, and immersed the family in all of these activities. He played the piano and loved to sing and encouraged all of his children to learn how to play one or two instruments, and together the family performed in many church and community events.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at the Centerville 1st Ward Chapel, 160 South 300 East, Centerville, Utah. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, and Tuesday morning 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services.
