Norman Eugene Alvord
“Mickey”
Norman Eugene (Mickey) Alvord passed away December 15, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Mickey was born March 23, 1933 in Salt Lake City, to Edwin Earl and Ida Mae Perrenoud Alvord. He was the youngest of seven children. As a young boy he was often found sitting in the middle of my brothers’ marble ring learning to play at an early age. In 1947 he won the State Marble Championship Tournament, National, and World Marble Championship.
Growing up, Mickey loved athletics and played football, and baseball, playing catcher on the All-State Baseball teams. During high school years he played for West High and also semi-pro for the city of Midvale.
He graduated from West High and was drafted into the U.S. Army in October 1953, during the Korean War and was assigned to the Air Force Combat Engineers. Here he played baseball for the 822 Combat Engineers in Korea and Anderson Air Force Base in Guam, traveling throughout the Pacific.
After returning home Mickey signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Yankees, but following spring training in Modesto, California, he was sent home because they brought two other catchers down from the big leagues.
Mickey went into Beneficial Life Ins. to make a payment and met a former classmate, Patsy Steele and soon after started dating. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on June 28, 1957. They have four children, 8 great grandchildren; Alyssa, Chase, Blake, Kade, Maddie, Kalyee, Addison, and Harper.
He graduated from Salt Lake Community College, and worked for Eimco, Sperry-Univac, and Chevron Oil.
Mickey served in many positions in the LDS Church, including Young Men President, Stake Missionary (twice), Seventies President, Stake Mission Presidency, Bishop’s counselor, Branch President, High Priest group leader and ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple, but his favorite was Home Teacher.
He is survived by his wife Pat, children; Michael (Libby), Judith (Michael) Meldrum, Mark (Jill), and Michelle (Dennis-dec.) Rodgers. Nine grandchildren; Sarah, Jeremy, Nicole, Megan, Derek, Trevor, David, Zachary, and Evan. 8 great grandchildren; Alyssa, Chase, Blake, Kade, Maddie, Kalyee, Addison, and Harper, loving each one dearly.
We would like to thank his wonderful doctors, Wasatch Dialysis, Promise Hospital, friends, and family for their love and support, especially daughter Judy, grandson Evan and great-granddaughter Alyssa who came and lived with us.
