Patricia Bowen Carlsen passed away peacefully on January 7, 2023, in Bountiful, Utah at the age of 87.
Pat was born July 5, 1935, in Logan, Utah, to Ronald George and Mildred Jorgensen Bowen. Her father being military meant Pat grew up moving around the country, but she spent most summers in Cache Valley, Utah with both sets of grandparents. She especially loved spending time at the Jorgensen home in Hyrum, Utah. Pat had a special fondness for Cache Valley and the Jorgensen’s storied Norwegian heritage.
As a young teenager, Pat’s family moved to Denver, Colorado where she developed lifelong friendships. She graduated from South High School in Denver in 1953. After one year of college, Pat met her husband Vern R. Carlsen who was serving as a military policeman in Denver. They were engaged on Christmas Day and married in the Logan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 6, 1955.
The family evidentially established a home in the Rose Park area of Salt Lake City, Utah. After the family grew to five daughters, they moved into their dream home in Bountiful, Utah – which Pat designed. A few years later they added a boy! Pat loved raising her family, serving, and developing lasting friendships in Bountiful.
Pat was an accomplished seamstress. Her extraordinary skills with a needle began as a small girl when she sewed clothes for her dolls. When her daughters were young, Pat sewed countless matching dresses, nightgowns, and outfits. Later in life, she made wedding dresses, wedding party dresses, and professional costumes. She even designed and made all her daughter’s wedding dresses. Her creative ability with a needle was extensive and included quilting, knitting, crocheting, and needlework. Her seamstress skills were only matched by her musical talent. She was an accomplished pianist and organist. It was common to hear her practicing a difficult Chopin piece in the home.
Pat was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and she loved being a member of the Bountiful 8th (Woodland Hills) ward. She helped costume the 1980’s church history production “Zion” held at the Tabernacle on Temple Square. She also served on Temple Square as host. These two experiences greatly impacted her testimony of Jesus Christ and his restored church.
Her family includes six (6) children, twenty-seven (27) grandchildren, and twenty-five (25) great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children Cathy (Peter) Okada of Cody, Wyoming, Karen (Richard) St. Jeor of Centerville, Utah, Joanne (Mike) Huff of Riverton, Utah, Linda (Brent) Keller of Providence, Utah, and Julie (Larson) Alder of West Bountiful, Utah, and Kenneth Vern (Samantha) Carlsen of Grand Forks, North Dakota. She is also survived by her brother Bob (Bonnie) Bowen and her uncle Reid (Gayle) Jorgensen of Providence, UT. She is preceded in death by her late husband, parents, and stepfather Hyrum Eckersley.
The family gives special thanks to Oak Ridge Assisted Living and Symbii hospice for the amazing and compassionate care they provided Pat during the last months of her life.
