PEARL STEENBLIK HOUSTON 1914 – 2009
&qoute;AUNT PEARL&qoute; Pearl Houston, 95, beloved aunt and friend, passed away Monday, September 14, 2009 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was born August 2, 1914 in Salt Lake City to Frederik and Janna Tempelman Steenblik, being a twin sister to Ruby and ninth of 11 children.
Pearl graduated from LDS High School. She married Elmer Thomas Houston on November 5, 1941, in the Salt Lake Temple. He passed away August 26th, 1977.
She was a secretary in the Salt Lake School District and worked at Backman Elementary, Horace Mann Jr. High and South High Schools for 27 ½ years.
Pearl was an active member of the LDS Church. She supported her husband when he was Bishop in the 29th Ward. She served as Young Womens President in Riverside Ward and as an ordinance worker with her husband in the Salt Lake Temple for 17 years.
Between October of 1977 and October 2004, she volunteered as a receptionist at LDS Hospital. She logged 20, 525 hours – which was a record for volunteers at the time she retired.
Pearl was preceded in death by her husband and all ten of her siblings: brothers Jerry, Roelof, Joseph, Frederik and sisters Fanny, Jennett, Lila, Mary, Ruby, and Naomi.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express thanks to Valene Brown, and Janna Springer, who gave devoted service to their aunt. Special recognition goes to Robin and Gary Hicks and family, and to Pyper, Jeff, Walker and Rex Thole who have given loving care to Pearl in their homes for an extended period of time.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 18, 2009 at 12:00 Noon at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 South 200 East. Viewing one hour prior to the services. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Condolences and online guest book at: Russonmortuary.com.
