Peggy Jane Lewis, age 91, passed away in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. Peggy was born September 3, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Alvin Thomas Lewis and Iris Jacobsen Lewis. She was the second of two children. Peggy grew up in Bountiful, Utah and graduated from Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah. Peggy continued her education and received a Bachelor’s of Education from Utah State University, in Logan, Utah, and later a Masters of Education from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Peggy was a school teacher at Jordan Junior High School for thirty-seven years specializing in physical education, but also taught health and home economic courses. In 1973, she was presented with an “outstanding service” award “to the youth of our community that is representative of the highest ideals and goals of the teaching profession.” In 1975, she was presented two Best Teacher Awards from various organizations. She enjoyed her chosen career and those she taught.
Peggy was single and independent her entire life and being a physical education teacher she kept in good physical condition and was very energetic until the past two years when a series of health issues finally slowed her down. She was still regularly exercising with her Silver Sneakers class up through her 89th birthday.
Peggy traveled the world and had visited many countries too numerous to mention on almost every continent. She had many fond memories and souvenirs from many places and relished taking those vacations with choice friends. Along with her father, she also took her nephews on vacations around the United States when they were in their youth.
Peggy was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings throughout her life. Her fondest calling was serving the women in her neighborhood as Relief Society President in the Winder 11th Ward for more than five years, which extended well into her early eighties. She loved those she served. She also loved to attend the temple often with her friends. She had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Peggy had a very kind and gentle spirit. She was always reaching out to others and giving them hugs, telling them thank you, or giving them kind words of encouragement. She had a great amount compassion for others who were having difficulties and struggles.
Peggy’s older brother, J Rodney Lewis (and sister in-law, Joan Lofgreen Lewis), passed away before her, as well as her parents. She is survived by nephews Alan (Melanie) Lewis, Steven Lewis, Roger (Andrea) Lewis, Jon (Staci) Lewis, and Garrett (Sarah) Lewis. Two other nephews, Thomas Lewis and David Lewis, also preceded her in death.
A short service will be held for her at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2024 at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main St., Bountiful, Utah. A visitation will begin one hour prior at the same location from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. Interment will be in the Bountiful, Utah cemetery.
The family would like to thank the employees, aids, and nurses, which are too numerous to mention by name, at Barton Creek Senior Living for all the love and support they gave Peggy as they helped care for her needs the last two years of her life, and especially this past month. We also appreciate the services from Inspiration Hospice Care.
