Biography

“Pete the Painter” passed away peacefully in his sleep on 6 April 2013 in Bountiful. Pete was born 19 April 1932 in Harlingen, Netherlands to Melis Arie Plaizier, and Aagje Trijntje Torenbeek. In June 1950, he and his family immigrated to the US and came to Idaho. Pete ultimately settled in Ogden, and first worked in meat processing plant. He was blessed to meet and apprentice with Orland Mitton, who taught him plaster/dry wall and residential painting which became his life-long occupation. He married his eternal companion, Fern Elva Olson on the 16th June 1953 in the Logan Temple. Their marriage was one of great love and dedication to each other and to their 12 children. In 1960 they moved to Bountiful and never moved again. Pete loved the gospel and served faithfully in many callings in the LDS church including Ward Clerk and a Bishopric. Together Pete and Fern served in Cub-scouting where he served for over 20 years. He received his District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award. He and his wife served a mission in Nauvoo in 1995-96; it was one of the highlights of their 50 years together. His motto was, “If not me, who? If not now, when?” One of Papa Pete’s objectives was to raise a strong, cohesive family, and was concerned for the welfare of each child until his passing. He was known for his quick wit, his great example of unconditional love and service to others. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, and his brother Carl. Survived by his loving and dedicated legacy, seven sons, five daughters; Leonard (Janet), Bountiful; Mike (Mary), Farmington; Ken (Ann), Layton; Rex (Diane), Bountiful; Evelyn, Bountiful; Jewel, Bountiful; Pam (Frank) Backman, Bountiful; Susan (Lance-deceased) Hill, Bountiful; Glen (Colleen), Bountiful; John (Jana), Nampa, ID; Cathy (Rob) Hunter, Salem, OR; Ben (Heather), Bountiful; plus 27 dearly loved grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and brothers Leendert and Jacque.
