Peyton W. Dennis

November 9, 1938 — July 29, 2019

Beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend Peyton White Dennis returned Home on Monday, July 29, 2019, due to complications of pancreatic cancer. He was born November 9, 1938, in Afton, Wyoming, to Burr Peyton and Zelpha White Dennis. He spent his childhood and teen years on a family farm near the present day Palisades Dam in Idaho. His family lived in Ririe, Idaho, during the winter months where Peyton helped run the family business, the local movie theater.
In 1957 he graduated from Ririe High School where he lettered in both football and music. He attended Ricks College and graduated with a two-year degree in electronics.
Peyton married Denice Nelson on March 12, 1959, in the Idaho Falls Temple. They made their home in Idaho Falls for two years. They moved to Salt Lake City in 1961. In 1965 they moved to West Bountiful, Utah, where he lived the remainder of his life. He served in many church callings including bishopric member, high council member, High Priest group leader, Sunday school teacher, and Scoutmaster.
He worked for Wycoff Warehouse on two different occasions. During his last few years with this company he worked as a foreman. In between employment periods with Wycoff, he spent three years working for a magazine distribution company. Although this was his all-time favorite job, he chose to resign rather than push the pornographic magazines the company distributed.
He started working for Albertsons Distribution as a long-haul truck driver in 1976 and stayed with them for the next 31 years. He loved driving and utilized his time to improve his mind by listening to recorded books, the scriptures, and hymns. For several years he participated in the Utah State Truck Rodeo competition, placing first many times which gave him the privilege of attending the national competitions. He retired January 1, 2008, in order to serve a mission with Denice.
From 2008 to 2009 they served in the Florida Tallahassee Mission where he was known as the Car Czar. Upon returning home he immediately began working in the Bountiful Temple where he served for nearly 10 years. He utilized his driving skills as a volunteer driver with the Bountiful Food Pantry for eight years.
Peyton loved music, fly fishing, gardening, and putting up outdoor Christmas lights. But his greatest love was his family. He made sure to devote time to each one of his children individually. He took time to help with homework whenever they asked. If they had problems, he was never too busy to help or answer questions, even late at night when they should have been in bed. He taught his children Gospel principles and facilitated Gospel discussions over many games of Sunday night Pinochle. He was always ready and willing to give priesthood blessings, even in the middle of the night. He always loved his family, prayed for them, and taught them to love the Lord by the very way he lived. His family was his greatest work and his life’s legacy.
He is survived by his wife, Denice Nelson Dennis; children, Sharon (Allan) Hogenson, Michelle (Martin) Christensen, Neil (Camille) Dennis, Kimberly Dennis, and Brett (Lisa) Dennis; sister, Lori Oldroyd; 23 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nicole; parents; sister, Karren Newcomb; one grandchild; and one great grandchild.
