Phillip Marion Olsen, of Bountiful, passed away on December 5, 2016 surrounded by family.
Phil was born in Provo, Utah to Leona Nelson and Marion "Pete" Olsen on Sept. 9, 1944. He attended Maeser elementary school where his dad was principal. Phil made lifelong friends at an early age which were like family to him. He played baseball…a lot. Growing up across the street from Harmon Park he literally lived there. As caretaker, the Olsen's had a shower shed that was made into a makeshift apartment. The family moved to Hawaii and later California. They moved back to Provo his junior year of high school where he met the love of his life "Mer, my little gal". They dated 7 years and were married in the Manti Temple on December 16, 1967. He attended BYU, the second love of his life, where he played Baseball. He loved attending the Varsity Club before ball games to chat with old players and coaches. They moved to Bountiful to take the position as Head Baseball Coach at Bountiful High School where they won 2 State Championships, multiple regional championships, and he was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. Greater than these accomplishments, he was a mentor and father figure to many players and students and loved them dearly. His greatest joy was his family. He adored his wife, kids and grandkids. He attended every sporting event, school program, and even dance recitals with a proud smile. He wasn't one to sit down and relax (except when a game was on), rather was always in a hurry to help those around him. Phil and Merilyn served a mission at the BYU athletic facilities as a host. It was a great honor for him to talk to athletes and their families about his BYU. Wherever he was, Phil changed lives. He will be remembered as a loving Husband, Father, Grandpa, Friend and Coach.
Phil is preceded in death by his parents Leona and "Pete" Olsen, grandparents Ruby and Conrad Nelson, Nellie and Ole E. Olsen. Phil is survived by his wife Merilyn, his children Pari (Dave) Bennion, Paige (Joe) Fabrizio, Pete (Cathy) Olsen, Penny (Aaron) Bradshaw, his sister Connie Russell, grandchildren Morgan, Laura, Leah, Hunter, Hanna, Leona, Grace, Phillip, Brinklee, Lily, Bryndee, Amelia, Bailee, Henrie, and Boston.
