Raleigh Schram Johnson, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away peacefully on December 11, 2024 in the company of his devoted and loving family. He was born June 19, 1932 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Nathaniel T Johnson and Hazel Cutler.
Raleigh graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1950. He married the love of his life, Joy Larene Storer in the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on August 27, 1952. Their honeymoon was spent driving across the country to Washington D.C. where Raleigh was stationed with the Air Force. After completing his Air Force service, he attended the University of Idaho at Moscow earning a degree in Electrical Engineering. His first job after graduating college was with the National Security Agency as a civilian at Point Mugu Naval Air Station in California. He then worked for Sperry Corporation in Utah, Ball Brothers in Colorado and then back to Utah working for TRW. When Raleigh retired, he and Joy spent their winters in St. George at McArthur’s Temple View where they formed many friendships that they considered their second family.
Raleigh’s love, fondness, and dedication to his wife and family were the most important things in his life. His greatest joy was his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He loved each one of them equally and they all felt they were special when they were with him. All will remember him for his honesty, integrity, and desire to serve.
Raleigh was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the scouting program, sharing his love of the outdoors with many young men.
Raleigh and Joy had a passion for family. They loved the outdoors – camping, boating, skiing, and hiking. They enjoyed many road trips together, even driving to Alaska multiple times. Raleigh was an avid golfer, rock hounder, bowler and pool player. He also enjoyed playing cribbage, hearts, and pinochle; sometimes making up his own rules. He passed his passions on to many of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, teaching them with patience and love.
Raleigh is survived by his children: Nancy Johnson (Dave Ireland) of Louisville, Colorado, Brad (Annette) Johnson of Fruit Heights, Utah, Guy (DeeAnn) Johnson of Fruit Heights, Utah, and Paula (Doug) Scott of Kaysville, Utah; 15 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Raleigh was preceded in death by his wife Joy Johnson; his parents; infant son Scott; brothers Jerry Johnson, Dell Johnson, Thane Johnson; sister Eunice Burrows, and granddaughter Jenna Gendreau.
A private celebration of life for immediate and extended family will be held at a later date.
