Reed was born June 22, 1918 in Downey, Idaho to Joakim Ferdinand Hartvigsen and Ellen Eilersten Hartvigsen, both Norwegian immigrants. He loved being a first generation American and was always proud of his heritage. He was raised in Downey, Idaho where he and his siblings worked with their parents to establish a family homestead and later moved to Logan, Utah where he excelled in his educational pursuits. The farmland in Downey, however, was always special to Reed. He was a farm boy at heart. He met Doris Harwood at Utah State University, and they were married on June 18, 1943 in the Logan LDS Temple. Reed graduated from Northwestern School of Dentistry in 1946 as a member of the U.S. Army. He then served his country proudly as a dentist in the United States Army during the Korean War at Camp Irwin, near Barstow, California. He later practiced dentistry in the Bountiful area for 40 years. He was well-known and will be remembered for his professionalism, honesty and loving care he gave to his patients. Reed was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as counselor in the bishopric, stake high councilman, Sunday school teacher, and faithful home teacher. He loved studying the scriptures. He and Doris served a mission to Bermuda in 1987-88. Their missionary service was a highlight of his life and fulfilled his lifelong desire to serve a mission. Reed was a lifelong learner and avid reader. He found his greatest joy in watching his family grow and progress. He was a perfect gentleman in every sense of the phrase and a wonderful example of love and leadership. He received the Freedom Foundation Award for his many years of service as organizer of the &qoute; This is My Country&qoute; production. He is survived by his three daughters and one son: Jeanne Richard Openshaw of Rexburg, Idaho; Ellen Brian Gold, of West Haven, Utah; Alice Duane Zauner of Grass Valley, California; and Philip W.
