Biography

After a valiant fight against a brain tumor, Rex L. Maughan has moved on to that great fishing hole on the other side.

Rex was born and raised in Wellsville, Utah. Rex served his country in the Korean War from 1952-1954. He was then called to serve an LDS mission to the Hawaiian Islands. He married Shirlene Petersen in the Logan Temple on September 27, 1957. They had six children together and taught them to put the Lord first in their lives, to keep the commandments, and to serve others. Rex instilled in them an appreciation of nature, the value of hard work, how to be compassionate, and the importance of gratitude. He enjoyed family gatherings with good food and all of the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids laughing and playing together. His favorite question was, “Are we having fun, yet?”

Rex’s passions in life were his faith, his family, service, and fishing. He was described as the ultimate volunteer. He was a volunteer for over 14 years at the LDS Conference Center. He also volunteered as an LDS temple worker, at Lakeview Hospital, and at Centerpoint Theater in Centerville. Rex and Shirlene were called to serve in the Singapore mission in 1999. They taught and served the people of Malaysia and Pakistan, making many lasting friendships and memories.

Some of Rex’s best days were spent with a fishing pole in his hand. His usual greeting was, “How’s fishing?” and he enjoyed spending time with all of his fishing partners, young and old. He loved to share the fruits of his labors and surprised many of his family members by leaving fresh-caught, slimy trout in a plastic bag in their refrigerators when they weren’t at home.

Rex leaves behind the catch of his life, Shirlene, and a family of six children and spouses: Mike (LaNa), Terry (Carene), Alan (Kim), Cindy (Ted) Jones, Wendy (Gary) Haws, and Travis (Emily). He is loved by 32 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters and three brothers. He is preceded in death by one brother.

Because of his firm belief in missionary work, in lieu of flowers the family suggests a contribution to the LDS Missionary Fund at http://www.ldsphilanthropies.org/missionary/.
