1924 Dick 2023

Richard "Dick" Thomas Winegar

December 11, 1924 — May 23, 2023

Huntsville, UT

Our beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, and Great-great-grandfather passed away peacefully on May 23, 2023.

Richard was born on December 11, 1924, to Thomas E. and Vilate Muir Winegar in Bountiful, Utah.

In his youth, he delivered newspapers on horseback with his brother Wayne, worked on his grandfathers' onion farm, and also worked with his Father and brothers at the family-owned Winegar and Sons Mercantile in Woods Cross. He graduated from Davis High School where he played football, baseball and lettered in track.

He was inducted into the US Airforce in 1943 and attained the rank of 2nd lieutenant. He was a Bombardier on A-20’s, B-24’s, and B-29’s.  Thankfully World War II ended before he was deployed.

Richard married Karleen Argyle on June 19, 1946, in the Salt Lake Temple. Most of their life was spent in Davis County owning and operating Winegar's Grocery stores and later Dick's Market & Karleen's Gifts. During this time, he became the Regional Manager for Mayfair Markets in California, Utah, and Nevada serving on the board of the Utah Retail Grocers Association where he served as president in 1975.  He and his partners founded Utah Bank and Trust which was later acquired by Wells Fargo.  Dick had a passion to teach his employees, many of them the youth of Davis County, the importance of hard work.

Dick was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His love for the Savior, the Prophet Joseph Smith, and President Nelson (3 months his senior), never wavered. He served in many church callings including the first Bishop of the Bountiful 29th Ward. Dick and Karleen served faithfully as Senior Missionaries in Hawaii and at the Salt Lake Visitors Center, which they loved.

After Karleen's death on December 8, 2005, Richard married Jean Schmidt on August 23, 2006. Jean proceeded him in death on October 3, 2016.

Richard loved spending time outdoors, especially playing golf, and always had beautiful yards and gardens. He enjoyed singing in Ward choirs and traveling with family and friends all over the world. He has made lifelong and eternal friendships in Bountiful, Palm Desert, Hawaii, and Huntsville. His nearly 5 years in Huntsville with Kent & Sandi were spent riding on his golf cart, helping with chores, picking up apples from the ground and feeding them to the horses and cows (they loved to see him coming), and enjoying fresh eggs for breakfast every morning. He loved the peace and serenity of this beautiful valley.

Richard loved his family with all his heart.  He was a true gentleman and a peacemaker who lived life to the fullest with integrity, honesty, and hard work.  He had a keen sense of humor, was quick to forgive, always kind and thoughtful to others.

As the Patriarch of our Family, your example of staying true and faithful to your God, Family, & Country will bless our lives forever.  We love you soo very much. You will be deeply missed.

Richard is survived by children: Linda Blosch, Santa Clara, UT; Lee Winegar, St. George, UT; LuAnn Wallin, St. George, UT; Kent & Sandi Winegar, Huntsville, UT; and 32 Grandchildren, 61 Great-grandchildren, 7 Great-great-grandchildren and 2 great-greats on the way.

He is proceeded in death by his parents, Karleen, Jean, two sisters, two brothers, son-in-law Marv Blosch, and daughter-in-law Barbara Winegar.
