Richard Giles Sharp

Richard Giles Sharp passed away on April 21, 2016 at his home in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by family, eight days before his 96th birthday.
Richard was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on April 29,1920, to June Bennion Sharp and Ida Giles Sharp. He graduated from West High School and studied at the University of Utah. In 1940-41 he served a mission in South Africa for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was reassigned to New England after 8 months due to South Africa's involvement in World War II.
He served in the US Army, 1942-45, as an aircraft mechanic. After the war he studied architecture at the University of Southern California.
Richard married Edith Porter on December 11, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. He began working as a draftsman in the LDS Church Architect's office, where he served as the chief draftsman for the Los Angeles California Temple.
After becoming an architect, he started his own firm specializing in hospitals and medical facilities. He later joined with Dick Jackson and Lynn Pinegar to form Jackson, Sharp & Pinegar Architects.
Richard was active in the LDS church all his life, serving in many ward and stake positions, including Bishop of the Bountiful 21st Ward (now Kimball Mill Ward), 1976-81. He served his community on the Bountiful City Council, 1984-88.
In 1989-90 Richard, with Edith, returned to South Africa as LDS missionaries so he could finish what he had started in 1940. After their mission they served many years in the Salt Lake Temple.
Richard is survived by his wife, Edith, and children: Ned Hill (Claralyn), Kathryn Poulson, David Sharp (Kristen), Andrea Burgon (Brad), Karen Foster, and Scott Sharp, his sisters Helen Madsen and LaJune Vincent (Richard), his brother Alan Sharp (Gloria), along with 21 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brother Milton Sharp and his daughter Linda Jean Sharp.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, April 29, 11:00 a.m., at the Kimball Mill Ward, 650 South 200 East, Bountiful, with a viewing from 9:45-10:45 a.m. There will also be a viewing Thursday, April 28, 6-8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful. Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Estates in Bountiful.
