Richard Lynn Burbidge

August 1, 1933 — September 26, 2021

Richard Lynn Burbidge, age 88, passed away September 26, 2021, in Bountiful, Utah.  Richard was born in Salt Lake County, Utah, August 1, 1933, the 5th child of Anthon L. Burbidge and Selena Jones Burbidge of Kamas and Cedar City.  Reared in Murray, Utah, Richard graduated from Murray High School.  After serving two years as a court reporter/stenographer in the U.S. Army, Korean Conflict, he returned home in 1955, and earned a B.S. at Brigham Young University in 1958 and an M.S. at Utah State University in 1968.

Richard was an educator for 34 years and taught business subjects at Cedar City High School, Weber State College and Ogden City High School.  He was then employed as an Education Specialist with the Utah State School Office of Education for 31 years in Salt Lake City.  Richard and the former Gretta Anne Romney were married in 1958 and resided in Bountiful.  They had five children, all presently living.

Following divorce in 1978, Richard married Arlene J. Danley Black, a teacher in Nebo School District.  They greatly enjoyed the education profession together, as well as skiing, traveling, and serving in various church capacities.  A second great disappointment in life came when Arlene was taken by cancer in 1998.

Richard was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in presidencies of Elders and High Priests groups, teacher education leader, Sunday School Supt and as a Ward Clerk.  After retirement and Arlene’s passing, he served several two-year assignments as a Church Service Missionary, assisting with producing church handbooks and manuals in other languages and assisting with the Liahona Magazine. One of Richard’s favorite hobbies was fishing.  He was also very good at tying his own fishing flies, which were very successful at catching fish.

Richard is survived by sons, Michael (Karen), Bryan (Jen), Kent (Gaylene), Eric (Tricia); daughter, Lynn Anne (Trevor), stepdaughters Devon and Kristen; stepson Aaron David, 13 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

At his request, there will be no formal services.  A graveside service for friends and family will take place at the Provo City Cemetery, Block 9 at 12:00 noon on Friday October 1, 2021.
