Richard William Adler (87) of Bountiful, Utah passed away on December 30, 2021, of causes incident to Alzheimer’s disease and COVID-19.
Richard was born on November 28, 1934, in Farrell, Pennsylvania to William John and Blanche Ruth (Slayton) Adler. He married Patricia Louise Brady on September 7, 1956, in Sharon, Pennsylvania and they have five children. He and Patricia joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1961 and were sealed in the Los Angeles California Temple. Patricia passed away on March 25, 2003. Richard married Shirley Lois Thrasher on August 24, 2006 in the Bountiful Utah Temple.
Richard graduated from Farrell High School in Farrell, Pennsylvania in 1952 and then attended Penn State University where he received his undergraduate and Master’s in electrical engineering. He worked in the industry and later returned to Penn State as an instructor and received his Ph.D. In 1969, Dr. Adler joined the faculty as a research associate professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, where his research interest focused on radio and antenna wave performance. In his later years, Richard enjoyed working in the yard, helping around the house, serving in his church, and was known as a kind, loving and quiet man with a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He and Shirley served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as service missionaries for the Family History Department in Salt Lake City. He loved their dogs – Kiwi and Lizzie – and could often be found sneaking tidbits of dinner to them from the table or sitting quietly with one of them on his lap as he read or did puzzles.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia and his sister Nancy. He is survived by his wife Shirley, his brother William, his children Anthea, Brent, Chris, Darren and Robert, his stepchildren Debra and Cynthia, and numerous grandchildren, step grandchildren and great grandchildren.
At Richard’s request, there will be no funeral services.
