Rick Dee Johnson returned home to his Heavenly Father on February 23, 2017, after a courageous 12-year battle against renal cancer. Rick was born on February 18, 1955, the third of nine children of Morris D and Rhea Hansen Johnson. Rick was sealed to his eternal companion Karen E. Bernson in the Salt Lake Temple on September 21, 1978. Together they were blessed with four children: Benjamin (Jennifer), Jessica (Cody), Tara (Scott), and Brandon and seven and a half beloved grandchildren.
Rick was the first in his family to graduate from college earning a computer programming degree. He worked for the State of Utah for 26 years in IT security.
Rick continued his love for scouting after earning the rank of eagle and 2 palms by serving as an Assistant Scout Master, Varsity Coach, District Vice Chair, and many other positions. While simultaneously serving as Varsity Coach and District Vice Chair, Rick was awarded the District Award of Merit. He earned his Wood Badge beads and served in several scouting position for over 34 years. He humbly accepted the award of Silver Beaver and made many life-long friends along the way.
Rick’s love for photography blossomed after he and Karen purchased a Minolta for their joint wedding present. His camera went everywhere with him. He developed his own film, enlarged his pictures and began a company, RJ Photography. Nikon won his heart and he spent much of his free time behind a camera, on excursions with friends or capturing memories for others.
Rick could spend hours in outdoor stores browsing fishing equipment and talking to other fisherman about current fishing conditions. He shared his love of nature with all those around him, teaching his four children to fish, hike, and camp. Rick had a great appreciation for the art of fly tying. He shared his interests with all those around him, inspiring many and influencing all.
Rick had a gift for friendship, helping others feel special and loved. He gladly accepted opportunities to serve others. Rick formed genuine friendships that lasted a lifetime. Although he had many hobbies, his true passion was his family. Rick shared his love through Sunday barbeques, playing games with his kids, nightly hippity-hops to bed, and eventful camping trips. Rick was known for leaving quirky messages, his bright and happy personality, and genuine care for others.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at the Farmington Utah South Stake Center, 695 South 200 East, Farmington. Friends and family are invited to visit Friday between 6 and 8 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 1941 N. Main, Farmington or Saturday, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at church. Interment will be at the Farmington City Cemetery.
