Robert Hubert Hall, 95, faithful husband, exemplary father, and loving grandfather passed away on March 25, 2017. He was born on April 2, 1921 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Almeada (Carol) Eardley and Hubert Gilman Hall. He married “the girl of his dreams,” Edith Thorson, on December 30, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they had seven children. Robert was always a stellar example to his children and others of hard work, integrity, compassion and spirituality.
Robert loved the outdoors, and often took his family and friends on fishing, hunting, and hiking trips, especially to his favorite retreat, the Wind Rivers in Wyoming, which has become a family tradition. His preferences of recreation were humble and simplistic: he drove a yellow Jeep and found joy in taking his kids on motorcycle rides or doing yard work in his old coveralls.
Robert enjoyed a successful career as a physician. Supported by his devoted wife, he studied at the University of Utah and at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri where he received his Degree in Medicine. At the time of World War II, he served stateside as an officer in the Army Medical Corps.
During the first 20 years of his medical practice in Salt Lake City he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as Infertility and Sterility, which blessed many otherwise childless families. He was generous with his time, being one of the last of his generation of physicians to make house calls. In 1971 he studied at the University of Washington in Seattle in Anesthesiology. Upon his return to Salt Lake City in 1973 he became the first obstetrical anesthesiologist in Utah.
After 51 years of marriage, in 1993 Robert’s beloved Edith died. In 1994 he married Thelma Kasteler, and enjoyed 14 of his retirement years with her and her children. Thelma died in 2009.
Robert never slowed down upon his retirement, and remained active in community affairs, including service as President of the Emeritus Alumni Association of the University of Utah, President of the Sons of the Utah Pioneers, and a member of the Optimist Club. He was an enthusiastic “Ute” fan and attended many University of Utah sports events with his children and grandchildren. He strongly believed in personal physical fitness and played tennis twice weekly into his 80’s.
Robert was a faithful member of the LDS Church, serving in many callings, including an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. It was very important to him to raise his children with the gospel principles and standards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Robert is survived by 6 children, Charles (Kristine), Craig (Lisa, Jeanette – deceased), Carol Bartholomew (Wynn – deceased), Brent (Janis), Edith, Kristine Crocker (Kevin), 22 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son (Steven), two brothers and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at the Kaysville 17th Ward chapel, 875 East 200 North, Kaysville at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 29. Friends may call at Russon Brothers Mortuary at 1941 N. Main, Farmington on Tuesday, March 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and from 11:15-12:30 PM on Wednesday at the church prior to the services. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
