Robert Wood

Robert C. Wood, Sr. was born in Brigham City, Utah to Collin Wood and Ora Calderwood on September 6, 1925. He was raised in Salt Lake City and graduated from Jordan High School in 1943. While still a Senior in High School, he joined the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and was called to active duty in October of 1943. He received his Navy Wings and was commissioned in 1946. The war ended before he saw action.He returned home to go back to school at the University of Utah. During this time he met and married the love of his life, Marva Hayes. In 1948, he rejoined the Navy and had the opportunity to fly and also finish his education attending the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey and then the University of Michigan where he received his Master’s Degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He served in the Korean War, flying 168 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross and eight air medals. He retired from the Navy in 1972 as Captain to go to work at Brigham Young University where he spent the next 17 years. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, always fulfilling any position asked to do, including that of Bishop. His wife was his very best friend and they served two missions together, one to Hawaii and one to Cove Fort. They traveled widely and enjoyed family and friends. Robert “Woody” is survived by wife, Marva; four children: daughter, Deon (Ron) Grimes and three sons: Collin (Kathy), Robert, Jr. (Rana) and Scott (Susan). He has 32 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends may come to call from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
