RULON MELVIN WOOD 9/16/1920 ? 2/19/2007 Our beloved father and grandfather Rulon Melvin Wood, age 86, passed away at home February 19th, 2007 in Salt Lake City. He was born in his parent?s home in Thatcher, Utah on September 16th, 1920 to Melvin John and Verna Watt Wood. Most of his early years were spent on the family farm in Layton, Utah. He graduated from Davis High School and attended Utah State. He then moved to Washington D.C. working with the Bureau of Reclamation. While there, he attended George Washington University. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and served with the 6th Photo Squadron during World War II where he made maps of Europe. While home on furlough he met Afton Marble on a blind date and they were later married on February 7th, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple. They spent their first year of marriage in St. Louis, and spent their remaining years in Salt Lake City. He worked for Hercules, and retired from Unisys. He worked as a cartographer, draftsman and design engineer. He was an active member of the LDS Church serving as counselor in two bishoprics, as well as executive secretary and stake financial clerk. He served in the Boy Scouts of America for many years as scoutmaster and district commissioner. He was active in Toastmasters International, starting the ?Downtowners Club? and participating in the clubs at Unisys and Hercules. He received many awards for his speaking including the Distinguished Toastmaster Award and received the ?Presidents Distinguished District Award?, as the top district in the nation when he served as Governor. He loved photography, travel, Branson, Missouri, art, sports, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a caregiver to his wife for many years. He is survived by his children, Larry Lorraine, Bruce, and Wendy, John. He is also survived by his 10 grand children, his brothers, Edwin Helen, Vern Eileen and one sister Ann Ralph. He was preceded in death by his wife Afton, his parents and one granddaughter. Funeral Services will be held at the Foothill 3rd Ward, 1794 So. Texas Street 2430 East in Salt Lake City at 11am Saturday February 24th, 2007. A viewing will be held from 9:30 ? 10:45am before the service at the church.
