Our loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Ruth Woolley Mecham, passed away quietly on February 18, 2014 surrounded by her family. Ruth was born November 17, 1928 to Shirley Mills Woolley and Hannah Inkley in SLC. In 1949, Ruth married her sweetheart, Arlin Tolman Mecham in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He preceded her in death after 60 devoted years. Together they were parents to 6 children.
Ruth was a precocious child who was reading books at age 4. She loved school. She graduated from South High at 16. After her children were born, she attended and graduated cum laude from the University of Utah. Then Ruth began her teaching career of twenty years. She loved motivating and helping her students succeed.
Ruth was truly blessed with the spirit of Elijah and had many sweet spiritual experiences seeking out her ancestors. She was an avid reader. She instilled in her children a love for these things. She loved working in her award winning gardens and said, “Sometimes the family worries just need to be dug into the soil and a beautiful flower planted in their place.” She was a member of the So. Davis Garden Club and the Daughters of the Utah pioneers.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings including, Primary Chorister, Relief Society Cultural Refinement teacher and President, Ward librarian, Gospel Doctrine teacher, Ward Historian and served for many years in the Bountiful temple.
Survived by her children, Debra Burdett, Shirley (Doug) Larsen, Arlene Rush, Carol Mecham, David (Nanette) Mecham, Lon (Kreada) Mecham, 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, her brother, Lyman Woolley, and sister-in-law Lola Woolley.
Funeral services held Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1 pm. North Canyon 2nd Ward, 3350 So. 100 E., Bountiful. Viewing Friday 6-7 pm Russon Bountiful Mortuary and prior to service 11:30-12:30 at the church. Internment Bountiful City Cemetery. Online guestbook at www.russonmortuary.com
