Samantha Hawkes Weigel
1980 ~ 2021
Samantha Hawkes Weigel, age 40, passed away on February 12, 2021 from a hiking accident on Antelope Island, near her home in Syracuse, UT. Samantha was born in Tacoma, WA on May 28, 1980 to Jonathan and Janis Hawkes. She was the third of five Hawkes children. She grew up in Lakewood, WA, attending schools in the Clover Park School District, and graduating from Lakes High School in June 1998. During this time, she learned to play the piano, did a paper route with her family, attended early morning seminary, competed on the track team, and participated in both concert and jazz bands, playing both alto and tenor sax.
She attended Brigham Young University, and graduated in April 2002, then served an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California Santa Rosa Mission. She loved serving others, and created many memories while also establishing permanent friendships. She even learned sign language to share her love of Jesus Christ with others.
Sam had an adventurous spirit and loved to visit new places. Destinations included Hawaii (multiple times), a six week trip to Europe, and a Tahitian cruise.
She met Warren Weigel in Lakewood, WA, and, after a brief courtship, the two were sealed in December of 2005 in the Seattle Washington Temple. Since then, schooling and work have taken them to Payson, UT, Bellingham, WA, Bremerton, WA, Chesapeake, VA, Portsmouth, VA (twice), and Syracuse, UT.
One year, Sam and Warren decided to visit as many National Parks as they could with their children. They visited Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches (multiple times), Canyonlands (multiple times), Mesa Verde, Great Basin, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Capitol Reef, and Death Valley. They also enjoyed camping locally in their 1971 VW camper.
Warren and Samantha created a home full of love, where others were always welcome. She served willingly in the Relief Society, Young Women’s, and Primary Organizations, and as a Ward choir pianist.
Samantha is survived by her husband of 15 years, Warren William Weigel; and three children, Warren William II, Jocelyn Beverly and Elijah Hawkes Weigel; her parents, Jonathan and Janis Hawkes; her siblings, Nathan (Lynness) Hawkes of Richmond, VA, Jennica (Shane) Schow of Chehalis, WA, Solomon Hawkes of Olympia, WA, and Benjamin (Constance) Hawkes of Olympia, WA; 29 nieces and nephews, and beloved aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and many other loving, extended family members. She also claimed an innumerable amount of other special people, known as her “bonus” family members.
In honor of her memory, take a hike, play the piano, laugh often, play games, hug your kids and friends a lot, and do things together as a family. Do not wait for a better time or nicer weather. DO IT NOW! There is no better time than the present.
