Samuel Marcus Ryan Gates returned to his eternal home on the evening of March 3, 2023, at the age of 27, after a lifelong struggle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Despite his physical challenges, Sam was a bright and courageous young man who had big dreams. Sam was always looking to expand his knowledge. He was a devoted student both spiritually and academically. Sam was a kind and tender soul, possessing a level of wisdom that few could match due to his unique outlook on life. He was able to see the beauty of everything around him despite his limitations to enjoy the many wonders of this world. Although he had so many challenges to overcome, he still accomplished much in his short life. He graduated from Woods Cross High School where he was voted Homecoming King his senior year. He also received his Eagle Scout award. He received his bachelor’s degree in English/Creative Writing from Weber State University in the spring of 2021.
He loved to talk to and meet people. Those who were privileged to speak with him found he had a deep heart and a listening ear. He enjoyed reading fantasy and science-fiction novels, playing video games with his friends and siblings, and expanding his culinary knowledge from his favorite cooking shows. He was an excellent back-seat-chef! He was a blessing in the lives of his family, and we are so fortunate to have had him as long as we did. We will miss him but are grateful for the promise that we will see him again through the love and grace of our Savior Jesus Christ.
Samuel was preceded in death by his grandparents; Norman and LaReta Gates, and Bruce and Ila Ryan. He is survived by his parents, Paul Norman Gates and Carla Ryan Dunleavy (Brian), his siblings, Taylor Ann Gates, Erin Elizabeth Gates, Madison Jane Johnson (Joshua), and Isaac Paul Gates; his niece, Ella Rae Ayon, and nephew, Krew Ryan Johnson.
