Sarah Smith Castle Thomas, 102, passed away March 28th in the home of her nephew.
Sarah was born June 9, 1909 in Salt Lake City to Orie and Sarah Susannah Smith Castle. From an early age she loved music and began learning the piano at 8. At age 13 she began teaching some neighbor children the piano which began a lifetime of giving lessons which continued until she taught her final lessons two days before she passed. She was also a gifted performer, whether playing the musical score to silent movies shown at the wardhouse, or to playing at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building, she brought joy to those who listened.
She was highly educated, with a Bachelors Degree from BYU, and a Masters and Doctorate of Education from the University of Utah. She used her education to bless the lives of the young, teaching school for 45 years. She married Jenkyn K. Thomas, February 21, 1957 and they enjoyed many happy, laughter-filled years together. Sarah was very generous, always willing to help others, including opening her home to many individuals in their time of need. Sarah came from strong pioneer heritage and was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life.
Sarah is proceeded in death by her parents, an older brother Orie, her younger brother Elias, and her husband Jenkyn. She is survived by all of her family, neighbors and friends who were cared for by her, and who cared for her.
Services will be at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful, Tuesday April 3rd. Friends and family are invited to a viewing from 9-9:45 am. Memorial services begin at 10 am. Internment will follow at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
