SHARON COOMBS ELLIOTT 04/23/1937 ~ 01/21/2019 FARMINGTON – Sharon Coombs Elliott, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother softly returned to her Heavenly Father on January 21, 2019, and into the loving arms of her devoted husband, Gary Edwin Elliott whom she had dearly missed since Oct. 10, 2010. Sharon was born April 23, 1937 to Wanda Wood and Lewis Brown Coombs and grew up in Farmington, Utah. When she was one year old her father died tragically. At age seven, Wesley Bowers Williams, “Bill,” won both her and her mothers’ hearts and became her father. Thus, in Farmington she was known as Sharon Williams.
Sharon graduated from Davis High School, then attended LDS Business College and worked in SLC. On February 3, 1956 she married her sweetheart, Gary, (recently returned from his LDS mission in South Africa) in the Salt Lake Temple. Gary’s military career and their service in the LDS Church gave them an adventurous life of travel and service. Supporting her husband and raising their five children filled Sharon’s days with joy, yet she still found time to serve in her church and community. She never complained over Gary’s military war and unaccompanied assignments, but kept him in the center of their hearts. Sharon was known for compassionately reaching out to others as a friend, neighbor, military wife/Red Cross POW/MIA spokeswoman during the Vietnam War, and church teacher and leader. The United States Marine Corps took their family from Utah to California, Iowa, Virginia, Chile, Panama, and Kansas. Then, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints put their talents to use in Guatemala where Gary served as Mission President (1984-1987). With dedication Sharon assisted and supported him while teaching, training, and loving their missionaries.
After their mission, Sharon worked at the LDS Church Beehive Distribution Center and Welfare Department, and served with her husband who was a regional representative in both the Logan and Brigham City, Utah areas, Ogden Mission Spanish branches, and as Temple Workers in the Bountiful Temple. In retirement, they moved to Santa Clara, Utah where they found others to serve and built many cherished friendships that continued to bless Sharon’s life after Gary’s passing. When sorrow and health issues made life tough, Sharon prayed each morning to know whom she should serve for that is what gave meaning to her life.
Sharon’s final years were spent in Perry, Utah and were filled with treasured activities with her siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When they married, their spouses were immediately cherished and counted as her own! Family members, missionaries, and dear friends delighted to gather near her to feel her love, hear her laugh, and see the mischievous twinkle in her beautiful blue eyes. They learned from the wit and wisdom of this sweet woman who radiated charity wherever she went. Her legacy will be a living one as her children and grandchildren seek to live up to her example of finding joy in loving service.
Sharon is survived by their children: wife of Micheal G. Elliott (Annette) of Santa Clara, UT; Deborah E. Allen (Mark) of Perry, UT; Sherry E. Southworth (Bob) of Eagle, ID; Mark N. Elliott (Sondra) of Auburn, KS; and Walter Wesley Elliott (Barbra) of Kaysville, UT; 26 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and her siblings: Edward L. Coombs of Evanston, WY; Estelle (Jerry) Stam of Elwood, UT, and Julie (Jerry) King of West Point, UT. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Micheal G. Elliott, and grandsons Gary Edwin Elliott and Ryan Elliott Southworth.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019 at Russon Brothers Mortuary 1941 N. Main, Farmington, UT, viewing from 9:45-10:45. There will also be a viewing Monday evening, Jan. 28, 2019, from 6:00-8:00 at Russon Brothers Mortuary.
