A bright light went out in the early morning of August 19, 2015, as Sheila Baker Krogue passed away from a mercifully short bout with cancer. She had been lively, telling jokes, and comforting everyone who came to see here even two days earlier.
Sheila was born March 28, 1939, and grew up only blocks from the historic St. George Temple as the middle child and oldest girl of three in a family of eleven siblings. She grew up learning how to find fun and make friends by introducing herself and taking an interest everywhere she went.
The Bakers didn’t have much as kids and she remembered her brothers sleeping outside much of the year growing up and eating what her father could grow. The prank-prone Baker brothers were the terror of St. George but they loved Sheila and each other and built relationships that keep the Baker family close today.
Sheila went to Dixie High School and Dixie State College and played the clarinet in the band and traveled in a quartet singing all over southern Utah. She grew up with Jeffrey R. Holland and his nickname for her was “Bake” which he fondly called her every time he saw her.
Dave Krogue talked her into marrying him on February 11, 1961 and they waited a little longer than most to start a family but were thrilled when they adopted three wonderful children, each two years apart, and raised them in Bountiful, Utah. While Dave carried mail, Sheila worked from home as a medical transcriptionist for F. Willis Taylor.
She then got a job as the school secretary at Tolman and later West Bountiful Elementary schools so her schedule could match those of her kids. She raised them on a diet of fun, hard work, and celebration of every holiday and birthday. She was a diehard fanatical supporter of BYU football and anybody who played against the University of Utah.
It was a magic moment in her career when she went to work at FranklinQuest during the hypergrowth years that allowed her to work with key customers and display her keen wit and loving kindness to dozens of employees and key executives like Hyrum Smith and Colleen Dom who still remember her fondly today. She never forgot a name by writing it religiously in her Franklin Day Planner.
She kept a lifelong group of friends entertained with her stories and jokes as they played bridge together on a monthly schedule that rarely varied.
Her church callings included Ward Relief Society President, Young Women’s President, and Stake Primary President. Her local ward reports over a dozen families lined up to bring in meals to Sheila and Dave to show what an impact she made with her neighbors. She always had candy in her purse and popsicles in the fridge for all the local children who loved her as much as she loved them. Her favorite callings were the greeter at the door and as the pianist for many years at the Avalon Care Center.
After retiring from Franklin she talked Dave into serving three different service missions for the LDS Church including three years at the Kaysville Bishops Storehouse, two years at the Centerville Drypack facility, and two years helping people get jobs at the Centerville LDS Employment Office.
With missions ending she and Dave tackled three years for the Bountiful Parade Committee and she was especially excited to guide the logistics in July 2012 when they had the 2200 Stripling Warrior March.
Her light still shines today as she is survived by her husband David E. Krogue, son Ken Krogue and his wife Crystal, daughter Allison and husband David Schultz, and son Jonathan and wife Bryce Krogue. She has eleven grandkids and two great grandkids with one on the way.
Her goal was to see her grandson Jonathan Krogue married to his fiancé Cassidy and she was able to see that great event on Friday. Her hopes of seeing her other grandson Jacob Krogue return from his mission in Yakima, Washington were not realized, but Elder Krogue heard the news and continues to serve.
Parents who have preceded her in death are William E and Melba Baker. Her living siblings include Kenneth Baker and spouse Annie Laurie, Alma and Marcia Baker, Darrell and Jackie Baker, Merlin and Sharleen Baker, Mary Ann and Boyd Snow, Steven and Carol Baker, and Nellie Gai and Scott Herbert. Siblings who have preceded her in death are Lloyd Baker and his wife Lavonna, Lynn Baker (whose wife Mildred is still living) and her brother Norman Baker and his wife Nadeen.
A viewing will be held at The Bountiful Shadows Ward at 1476 North 300 West, Bountiful, Utah on Friday, August 21st, 2015 at 6:00pm until 8:00pm. The funeral will be Saturday, August 22nd, 2015 at 1:00pm at the same location. There will also be a viewing prior to the funeral at 11:45am until 12:45pm.
